Hey SandWriter, I’ll answer your question if you actually bother to follow-up on everyone’s responses to your whiny OP.
You’re just a big meanie, andros.
UncleBeer - Perhaps you didn’t see my first post in this thread where I said “I don’t mind the swearing, but this part (where he threatened to ban people for expressing opinions in GQ) does bother me”. That’s the point to which my other comments have been directed.
If a moderator wants to close or move a thread, fine. If he wants to swear a bit in the process, that’s fine, too. But if he threatens to ban someone for posting in the wrong forum  , that’s not so fine.
Nowhere have I suggested that any rules be slackened. So far as I know there is no rule that accidental posting to the wrong forum is a bannable offense.
As you say, we are all adults, and most of us even act like adults most of the time. That is why I see the tone in manhattan’s response to be so unnecessary. It really doesn’t add to the prestige of the boards when the moderator’s are the ones committing the ultimate SDBM sin of being jerkish.
bnorton:
Yeah. If.
But he didn’t. All he said was that if people are “unwilling or unable to learn” how to follow the rules, they don’t need to be posting.
No one suggested that there is. Not even that horrible jerk Manny.
(Oh, and I get that all the time, 'Beer. Nyah.)
(wanders in, munching a salami-and-liverwurst sandwich)
Oh! We have prestige now? 'Scuse me while I go iron my dickey.
(drops the crusts into the potted fern and backs out of the room quickly)
All - Obviously he can swear as he locks a post, cause he did do it, but is it in the rules that you can swear, and by swearing I mean ‘be mean’ when you do it.
Hastur - If I knew what BANAL meant I’d probably be insulted
Alice_in_wonderland - he would move the thread cause people were still posting to it.
pepperlandgirl - there are numerous ways in which to stop him if the behavior is out of line. One way would be complain to the Chicago Reader. I’m not about to start doing that, but we are not completely powerless as your post implies.
MEBuckner - see All
Captain Amazing - see All
Lemur688 - see All
LarryMudd- I don’t care about your opinions either
Gigobuster - thanks for the info
Blalron - thanks for the info
Wikkit - thanks for the info
Joe K - still not getting it
DarrenS - I agree, see All
Sailor - thanks for the warning.
Arden Ranger - that was funny
coosa - see All
Balthisar - since your not coming back…
cagiva650 - I’m not sure who Duck Duck Goose is but I agree the thread could have been closed and or moved without swearing.
Suasponte - only commenting on Captain Amazing’s post
Jonathon Chance - that would be cool to see
JeffB - didn’t know there was a race, maybe I shouldn’t have singled out manhattan, but it was kind of a shock.
bnorton - I agree, basically the point I was trying to make
Ferret Herder - if everyone did that then we wouldn’t need moderators in the first place. I’m not complaining that he locked the thread I’m wondering about the WAY he did it.
Muldoon III - What shit, what fan? When the table cleaners declare war on the non-table cleaners?
Beastal - interesting link
bnorton - on some level I agree, but I think you should know which forum you are in, it’s in bold letters at the start of every thread, and if you search, the thread’s forum is also listed in the results.
Ethilirst - Looks like he can swear whenever he wants. To me swearing on a board outside of the Pit is like violence, the last resource of the incompetent.
CrankyAsAnOldMan - responding to Beastal
Shit, this is taking forever, I have to get back to work now.
Yes. It is. Cope.
(Hmph. Left off another list. What am I, chopped liver here?)
Well, I see your Mod application is sailing through the approval process, chopped liver
SandWriter - I dont know about you, but if I had manny’s job and had to put up with the shit he does, I would swear a hell of a lot more than he does. IMHO, cut him some slack.
>> But if he threatens to ban someone for posting in the wrong forum , that’s not so fine.
You are lucky I am not a mod because I would ban outright anybody who posts in the wrong forum. What is it with people who wander in and cannot even read the freaking forum descriptions? Come to think about it Manhattan is just too lenient. Vote for me in the next elections. I will rule with an iron fist and you will need no more elections after that. But I promise not to swear, except under my breath.
Apparently you’ve read manhattan’s remark wrongly. He has not threatened to ban anyone for posting in the wrong forum. He has warned people that continuing to do so will result in banning. And I don’t see it as jerkish at all. If you don’t object to the profanity, and read his words with the correct interpretation, there’s nothing with which to take issue. I see maybe a bit of frustration at having to repeat his message many times over his years of moderating that forum, but so what? If the message is harshly worded and laid out with the consequences of disobeying, perhaps it’s more likely to be remembered by those involved.
And not to put too fine a point on it, but one of the qualifications sought of staff members is having a bit of an edge in the manner of our patron, Cecil Adams.
You could have at least mentioned me.
:smack:
Well. That reply surely took me way to long to compose and submit. MY post above is intended to be directed to bnorton, in case that isn’t immediately obvious.
I think part of the problem here was the opinions were not in answer to the question. If the OP asks “when did this practice begin?” and someone answers, a second poster could dispute the answer - if a full fledged debate breaks out, the thread would be moved. But here, the debate was not about the original question of when the practice began - it was about the propriety of the practice itself. A whole different matter. I agree with Manhattan here.
Yup. More deserving of a pitting, if I was to be asked, which I never am, so I don’t know why I even bother.
Jiminy Cricket in a weasel suit, driveby posts are “wrong?” What the fuck is this all about?
Fuck me blue, Wikkit, are you really suggesting that drivebys should be pitted? Or that the joking :duck and run: comments should be? Enquiring minds, m’man. You, I’m happy to give the time of day to. (As opposed to people who, say, start threads and then refuse to engage in any conversation. . . .)
They’re both annoying, but :d&r:s moreso. If you can’t post a joke without following it with fifty blank lines and a disclaimer at the bottom, you’re not telling a good joke.
As they say, 60% of communication is miscommunication. It’s not like the board is going to collapse into itself if someone doesn’t understand it that poster A is just making a joke at poster B’s expense. The misinterpretations of a bad joke are often more amusing than the bad joke by itself.
Now you see why nobody asks me. And quit having sex with Smurfs, ya perv.
Hey, she was of age . . .
I hear what you’re saying. Some things get overdone, always, in all communication. The whole :d&r: thing is meant to communicate what in a face to face convo would be a mock shrinking back and covering one’s head as though expecting rotten tomatoes to be thrown. In theory, it’s not a disclaimer, nor a “This Is A Joke” signal, but more of an acknowledgement that the teller knows very well it’s a bad joke and might precipitate those thrown tomatoes. It’s cute, and has its place, but like all such cutenesses can be overplayed and overused.
My jumping shark’s breath smells like the worst . . . felch . . . ever.
andros, wikkit, we’re all on the same page here. Page 2 that is.
Umm, yeah. Ok.
So you do acknowledge that Manhattan was in no way out of line, then?
For the record here is manhattan’s full post:
Careful reading shows that manhattan, in fact, did not threaten to ban anyone for accidently posting to the wrong forum. The phrase “persons unable or unwilling to learn this…” I suppose implies that such a ban would require a pattern of abuse. Fine.
Still, I’m standing by my position that his response was over the top, unnecessary, and - coming from a moderator - counter-productive to maintaining the level of discussion that these boards are known for.
And so long as I’m pissing off the moderators, what’s the deal with all this hand wringing about the moderators having to put up with so much shit? What exactly would that be? We all read the same posts as the mods, we all get flamed just like the mods. If you get frustrated “at having to repeat (some) message many times over”, well, tough. That’s the moderators’ job. Pardon me if I don’t cry a fuckin’ river over this.
Finally, since I seem to be determined to put myself on every moderators shit list today, there is this: :
Now, really! Don’t flatter yourselves. “NO ONE GIVES A FLYING FUCK ABOUT YOUR OPINIONS IN GENERAL QUESTIONS!” is not in the same league as Cecil’s stuff.
