Can Manhatten Swear When Closing A Thread in GQ?

Guin accepted it as a apology, and guess what? Her opinion is the only one that matters. So you don’t think he apologized. That an a buck-fifty will buy you a cup of coffee.

And who said I was Catholic?

Catholics everywhere breathe a sigh of relief.

Dear bnorton, every time I read this sentiment, I have the same reaction:

You think the moderators shouldn’t complain about their jobs? If I used the same logic as you, I would say:
“You don’t like the way manhattan does his job? No one’s forcing you to post here. Don’t let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.”

Which is why your logic sucks (and I don’t feel the need to add IMHO).

Uh, no, we certainly do not do the same things as the moderators. Do you have one forum here where you have to continually check over all active threads in their assigned forum to watch for issues like topicality, personal attacks, excessive vulgarity, violations of copyright, attempts to break the law, and so on? Do you have to call out the posters who do this? Do you monitor for returning trolls/sock puppets and confer with the other mods when you think one has shown up? Do people expect you to read that forum daily (or at least your buddy who does the same thing should be covering for you, if not). And do you then get Pitted by someone whining about your decisions? While you’re throwing around the word “job”, note that they sure aren’t getting paid for this.

No, you’re a poster here. You read the threads you want to, post when you want to, and occasionally maybe you’ll piss someone off enough to get Pitted. You could disappear for months and maybe if you made an impression, someone might ask, “Hey, where’s [postername]?” You have zero responsibilities other than following the rules of the message board, which is what the moderators also do when they’re just participating as a poster and not in an official capacity - except that other posters tend to hold them to higher standards than your average poster then anyway.

I thought the same thing ducky, how refreshing for you that in spite of all the heat you’ve been getting, to some you are still an anonymous poster on the sdmb!

Dozens of threads like these scrutinizing every action in painstaking detail?

You’ve made two other posts in this thread which explicitly state your problem is not that which you now claim. Your prior posts say both say:

So now you’re saying that the swearing is what bothers you? I’m uncertain which of us is more confused.

Oh, bnorton, when you’re done, please let me have the stick. I have some bears I’d like to poke with it too.

And thank you for the erudite, impassioned defense, Ferret Herder. We appreciate it.

Of course, I’ve just screwed up. You will now be lableled a brown-noser and teacher’s pet by some I’m sure.

Bears or beers?

That’s because, as I said earlier, you’re a big meanie, andros. Poking innocent, helpless bears. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Oh, I am. Deeply, horribly ashamed. No, really.

This is where Muddy Etymology[sup]tm[/sup] comes in handy: “Banal” is “anal” prefixed by “B”. Therefore, a “banal” OP is an OP with a bug up their ass.

Happy to serve.

What was that rule again about not writing posts in the vein of pulls up a lawnchair

Coming to this thread a bit late, but I got warned a while back for calling a poster asshat in in this thread. Granted - it was a direct insult, to something I perceived as being generally obnoxious and stupid. But I took heed.

That being said - in re: the OP, I think a stern warning, before blowing the top, might have been an idea. YMMV

:snort:

You think Manny blew his top?

:snort:

Maybe this’ll make up for calling out Ed Zotti in CCC the other day about the editing errors in the “tornadoes only in the US?” column?

A vote for yes. When the conversation is so pointless as it was in that thread, yes.

Moderators can complain about their jobs all they want, just don’t expect much sympathy from me. Where’s the flawed logic there?

Well, I can help you out here. It’s you. Where, oh, where did I ever say that I was bothered by swearing? Are you referring to my example of manhattan’s “flying fuck” quote? You can take the “fuck” out or put a couple of ‘em back in for all I care, but it still won’t come up to the level of Cecil’s invective.

Now, having said all that, I actually do realize that moderators do a lot more than regular members as ** Ferret Herder** rightly points out. In addition, it should be pointed out that it hasn’t been moderators who have been complaining about their jobs but rather other members defending them. I agree that the mods should be given some slack, but at the same time I think it’s perfectly legitimate to call them when they overstep their authority. In retrospect I regret using some of the colorful language (e.g., power whoring) in my first post. I think it got in the way of the content.

No need to worry, a little penicillin and that should clear right up.

The flawed logic that you expect us to take your complaint seriously. But now I see your point of view. My response to your complaint is “Pardon me if I don’t cry a fuckin’ river over this.” :stuck_out_tongue:

Well, I sure hope you have something up your sleeve for those of us allergic to penicillin.

And Arnold love, please tell me you are just talking about not taking bnortons’ complaint seriously and not the rest of us?
You know I don’t think I have ever been reprimanded by a mod and I know that I have never had a complaint about the boards, and I really never have anything much useful to say, but sometime, someday I just wish someone would take something I say seriously.
Say it isn’t so that you would let one bad apple spoil the bunch?
