Can one still breastfeed after augmentation?

My wife wants breast implants. I’m perfectly happy with her current endowment, and she seems to understand that. But it’s something she’s always wanted to do for herself. Personally, I’m on the fence about the whole issue…I like them the way they are, but I certainly wouldn’t complain if they were bigger. But just to clarify, I’m certainly not pushing the issue. If it were up to me, she wouldn’t undergo any risky surgery. But…whatever makes her happy.

She wants to do this soon…as in, whenever the available funds are sufficient. For the record, she’s 24 now. But there’s something else looming on the horizon…children. In a few years, once she’s gotten her career more established, we’re going to want to start a family. We’ve talked plenty about all kinds of kid-related topics, including breastfeeding. When the idea of implants enters into this equation, we find ourselves without an idea of what the consequences really are.

Specifically, what are the long-term impact of breast implants on the ability to breastfeed? I thought–without any evidence to lead me to this conclusion–that once you had a boob job, breastfeeding was out of the question…a physical impossibility. She, however, believes that you can still breastfeed after the surgery.

So, what’s the truth?

Providing there are no complications during surgery and the doc doesn’t mess things up while putting it in, function should not be affected.

This one seems to indicate that there could be difficulty. I’d see if you can get access to the references cited as well, just for some more information.
