OK , so it’s not one of the more important questions of our time . I am curious , dammit !
I just made myself a nice salad for lunch , and while I was cutting up the radishes , which I LOVE , it dawned on me , I have never had them anyway but raw . This leads me to the title question .
Can radishes be cooked ? If so , how ? Recipes using radishes , please .
Okay, your question got me curious, too. So I googled up “cooked radishes.”
Whadayaknow? Your American is showing. It looks like cooking radishes shows up in cookboods in Europe. Cooking 'em with peas and butter seems to be a popular method of accomplishing the deed. The heat takes a lot of the bite out of the radish. But every recipe warns not to overcook them.
Nope - have you ever had a cooked turnip? Radishes are closely related to turnips, and taste similar when cooked. They’re just a little more delicate. I like them in stews in place of turnip or rutabaga.
My father, who was raised dirt poor on a farm in the '30’s, would eat baked turnip/radish for supper. It’s basically the same prep that you’d do for a baked potato.
I never tried it myself, but he inhaled the stuff.
OK , just finished my simple stir fry with radishes … and it is YUMMY !!!
I didn’t have sesame oil , so I used olive oil , thinly sliced breakfast steak , minced garlic , sugar snap peas , onions , frozen peppers , chopped cabbage , and yes , radishes . Sprinkled on a little terriakki sauce , dumped it over rice …
Mmmmmmmmmm… good eatin’ ! I’ll be doin’ this one again !
Mooli is just a big radish; ordinary radishes are great cooked, but best only cooked lightly, IMO - tossed into a stir fry so they retain most of their crispness.
