Can the Democratic party nominate someone other than the incumbent President at their convention?

The legal answer to the thread title question is — yes, because the DNC can change the nomination rules as it sees fit.

However, giving the nomination to someone other than Joe Biden, absent his dropping out, would majorly violate democratic norms, involving the primary system, that have been firmly in place for over fifty years. The Democrats cannot do that because democracy is one of their highest values.

I know. The point behind my sarsactic comment was that the man has zero name recognition, and that’s not a good sign if you’re comsidering slotting them into the presidential campaign this late in the game.

My point is that I think there are others in the Democratic Party who could beat Trump had they gotten in the race much, much earlier. Biden isn’t the only one who could take DJT down. Some names would be Harris, Pritzker, Newsom, Shapiro or Bullock. But that won’t be happening.

As much as Biden’s performance unsettled me last night I don’t think they should push him aside and nominate someone else. The panic felt last night has receded for me in the light of day.
