Thankfully for you, upsets never happen, and everything Trump wants happens very easily. It’s not like these sorts of things have been hard to predict lately.
Millions and millions go a long way in Alabama. Thousands and thousands gets you a fair bit. Of course that applies to both parties, but still.
Pouring money in won’t do it. The democrats will need to be strategic to both maximize turnout and pick off conservatives who are turned off by Moore’s bigotry and craziness. Sending big names could backfire.
Maybe Hillary could help.
“I’m pro-gun! I make a pledge to you to always vote along with my republican colleagues on 2nd amendment issues if you elect me to congress!” would probably be enough to get him over his 6-point deficit. There are a lot of gun-rights single-issue voters in Alabama that will put up with just about any character flaws as long as they keep the Clintons from taking their guns away.
You joke but the black vote in Alabama is all important to Democrats and Hillary Clinton is still very very popular among black folks in the south. She won over Bernie in the primary by 78% to his 19% of the vote, largely thanks to strong black support. If she could motivate people to get to the polls for a special election it could very well make the difference.
If she couldn’t motivate black voters to get to the polls in an election where she was running, how is she going to get black voters to get to the polls in an election where she isn’t?
Maybe Bill could have done it twenty years ago, but he is old news. Hillary is still busy hawking her book and pointing fingers at everybody (except herself) - rebuilding the Democratic party isn’t high on her agenda. And she is the last person on earth who can do it. She’s not a campaigner - we learned that twice, once in 2008 and again in 2016. Or maybe we didn’t learn it, where “we” means “the Democrats”.

Shodan
I think sending Hillary would be counterproductive, but Michelle Obama might be perfect – she’s hard to hate (though I know some people do for reasons I can’t fathom) and she might be great at getting a very high Democratic turnout in a state like Alabama.
Let’s send Hillary Clinton and Jane Fonda to campaign for Roy Moore. Maybe Moore wouldn’t let them on stage, but shots of them in the crowd cheering wildly for Moore might disgust enough Moore voters to make them stay home.
I apologize in advance if my ‘sarcasm’ meter is broken, but I honestly can’t tell: do you actually believe GOP voters are stupid enough to get suckered by that? Or do you think (a) no, of course not; but (b) that joke works?
I think you’re wrong either way, but I’m curious as to which it is.
Michelle comes across to many voters as “arrogant black woman.” Of course, Hillary might just be “arrogant white woman,” and those voters might not be winnable anyway, but the idea that Michelle Obama is “hard to hate” sounds like Trumpers saying that “Ivanka and Melania are likable”; a great many people do dislike her.
Democrats need to contest elections everywhere elections are held. If they don’t contest elections in areas they didn’t previously win, they’ll never start winning those areas.
That said, the “fly in a celebrity the weekend before the election to hold a rally” strategy is not gonna work in Alabama. Instead, the Democrats need to be contacting local activists–the NAACP, Black Lives Matter, whoever they can find–and asking how many folks they need to drive people to the polls on election day, how many people they need to help people obtain documents necessary for voting, how many people they need to verify that nobody’s getting unjustly kicked off the voter lists, how many people they need to double-check that Democratic precincts have working voter equipment, etc. The ground game needs to get upped.
Mostly being facetious. There is no way a Democrat wins statewide office in Alabama no matter who either nominee is. Every nickel spent on this race is a nickel better spent elsewhere. I was offering a tongue in cheek Hail Mary play for the Dems- I don’t think it would work but I know damn well no other approach works.
Got it. (I wasn’t trying to be a dick; I just truly didn’t get what you were going for.)
Really? She doesn’t seem even arguably “arrogant” to me. Other than their association with Trump, Ivanka and Melania are likable enough.
Other than that, right.
Is Michelle arrogant or just uppity?
There is one blatantly obvious reason why they hate her and it makes her even worse than Hillary to send to Alabama of all places.
My point is about turnout - if every last Democrat votes, they might have a tiny sliver of a chance.
Plus, forcing other Republicans to publicly support Moore, which could hurt them in the long run.
One thing to consider is that Alabama politics are traditionally appallingly dirty and negative. The only type of contest possible is a mud-slinging contest. So will engaging in one do enough damage to Moore that it might cripple his ability to actually, you know, do anything, or are all his negatives so baked in that it will open Democrats to a ton of attacks without really changing perspectives on Moore at all?
