Last night, I was thinking about the Oscars (obviously), and remembered that televised broadcasts of awards shows have a category in the Emmy awards. The Oscars usually win, of course. What I want to know is: can the previous years’ telecast of the Emmy awards win an Emmy? Could the 2001 Emmy Awards (awarded in 2002) win an Emmy at the 2002 Emmy Awards (to be awarded in 2003)?
The website for the award is emmys.com, so “Emmys” would be my guess; but they dodge the issue by always referring to them on the site as “Emmy awards.” The category you’re referring to isn’t for just award shows; the category is called “Outstanding Variety, Music Or Comedy Special.” Last year the Oscars were nominated, but the award went instead to “America: A Tribute To Heroes.” The Emmys (!) weren’t even nominated, and I’m not sure if they have ever won.
Taking a look at the Emmy archives, the Emmy awards were never nominated for an Emmy. The director of the 1977 show won an Emmy, but the entire show itself was never nominated. I guess the only place the Emmys could win an award is The Onion’s “Awardy Awards.”
