Can We Keep Politics Out of IMHO and MPSIMS?

My words exactly!

Only I’d put them in a different order with other words interspersed, thus creating some sort of cogent articulation.

We pick on you more because we love you more. True. Just like in elementary school.

Hey, I suggested taking a short break and got kicked all over the place. Politics is like malaria: you can only keep it at bay through continual effort, get fever and chills regularly anyway, and can only be cured by a near-lethal fever from something else.

Your “short break” was a ban on politics for the entire MB, not just one or two forums. Hardly the same.

You’re So Damn Serious, John. I admire you for that.

Hijack. Enough.

I’ll take what I can get

I see you as the brash, populist outsider, often outspoken, seeking to drain the Chicago swamp of vested interests; JC as the establishment figure, more of the same old same old, with nagging suspicions surrounding his philanthropic activities and the thousands of SDMB member PMs found on an unsecure laptop in his basement.

ETA: I’m probably not endearing myself to either one here, am I.

“Lock Him Up! Lock Him Up!”

Wait. What role is Tom playing?

Exactly. Tom is the establishment. JC was the upstart who ruffled some people’s feathers, but now has settled in. And Bone is the new guy who no one has found a reason to dislike. Yet.

At the risk of trying to bring a serious discussion back on track, I do have to wonder if some of the objections to renaming “Elections” as “Politics” are that the armchair pundits here on the boards worry the rest of us won’t be enlightened by their wisdom if it’s all out of the way somewhere.

And Jerry Mathers . . .

Don’t worry. There isn’t much risk of bringing serious discussion back by making snide comments about the people you disagree with.

Feel the burn!

I strongly oppose renaming Elections. The threads in elections are about various campaign strategies, debates, political conventions, and referendums. There are enough of those to keep the forum active, Europe will see several major elections in 2017 even though it’s an off year for USA elections. I don’t think it should be cluttered up with threads about racist drunken uncles and family fights over election outcomes.

Yeah, at some point the waters will find their level and people will get back to their lives. Besides it’s not as if for all these years we have been able to prevent anyone who has an ideological point from trying to shoehorn it into any other thread.

I must agree, the name maketh not the thing, and the risk would be that then others would jump to say “move it to Politics” if you even mention you were playing at the Trump Resort when you hit a hole-in-one with the wrong club, when, as others have mentioned, some questions though they may contain some electoral or political matter ***are ***straight factual queries suitable for GQ, others are matters of going deep into political philosophy and comparative constitutional law suiting GD, and others yet of course are Pitworthy.

Since I don’t live in America - and I’ve been on the boards long enough for that not to be news to people - I don’t actually have any opinions on most US politics besides “I don’t particularly want to read about it all the time.”

If we constantly filled the forums with Australian political discussions you’d feel the same way, I suspect.

I wouldn’t mind it at all. I follow mainly USA, Canadian, and European politics. I’ve watched the Australian parliament on occasion, but don’t follow it as often as I should.

That’s nice. What does that have to do with “armchair pundits” who “worry the rest of us won’t be enlightened by their wisdom if it’s all out of the way somewhere”? Oh yeah, nothing.
