Can we put a strikethrough button on the post box?

I love strikethroughs and think they are great for comedy when writing, but I don’t offhand know the way to do them in the html, and even when someone inevitably tells me how to do it in the next post or two I am still going to be too lazy to manually put it in.

I see it a lot on this board and am just wondering if it’s possible to put an icon in the text box like bold, italics, and underline have.

I believe the powers that be dislike non standard things. If it does not come with the software that runs the board, it probably won’t happen.

Oh, lots of things come with the software that runs the board that they don’t let happen. Avatars & embedded pictures, for example. I doubt that this is something that would be abused on the level of those, however, so it’s probably just that few enough people need it that it’s not worth implementing.

It’s the del tag. [ del ] text [ /del ]

Becomes like [del]this[/del], no…wait, this.

I know you already pointed out how you’re too lazy to manually do it, but that’s what it is in case you didn’t know at all.

For me, it’s not laziness… it’s forgetfulness, plus the poor correspondence between what I think it’s called (“strikethrough”) and what it’s really called here (“del”).

In other words, if I think I want to do a strikethrough, I can’t find it by searching for “strikethrough” except in the case of a post that juxtaposes the two (like this one).

For the record, I don’t think any strikethrough tag is strictly standard BBCode in this version of vBulletin; it seems that it might be an addon* (“non-standard”) and different from the addons on other vBulletin installations. Which is why google is less than useful.

*Yes, I am, in fact, contending that at one time, The Powers That Be actually consented to install non-standard addons. GASP!

I don’t think that is the boards’ problem. Idle told you how to do it. Now you know. Everybody’s happy.

If you ever forget, which I do from time to time, there is a sticky in this forum called “FAQs - Please Read First”

Here:

In that post is a link to another post that lists the VB codes. It’s called “FAQs - Technical Issues for Posting”

Here:

Post 8 lists the various VB codes.

EDIT: Actually it is the first link in Post 8 that takes you to a page that lists all the various codes as links. Click on the link for the code you want and it takes you to a page where it shows you exactly what to type.

click the quote tag button. Change the word to DEL

It works [DEL]occasionally[/DEL] every time.

I create spoiler tags the same way. Change QUOTE to SPOILER .

Surprise!!!

You can type them as lower case, I do as I like to be lazy, and it works as well.

zample:

Any example that doesn’t involve a joke? Only times I remember seeing it is when someone strikes through a smart ass comment and leaves the serious comment alone. Not that I see anything changing but you would have a better case if it didn’t mean changing the board settings to make it easier for the occasional joke.

A spoiler tag button would be more useful. A lot of posts in Cafe require spoiler boxes. People get upset if you don’t use them in discussions about tv shows or movies.

[del]Test[/del]
[noparse][del]Test[/del][/noparse]

Thanks. But I am too lazy myself! :stuck_out_tongue:

Spoiler tags would be nice also.

please.

I thought I remembered that when I first started posting on the SDMB, the text box you got for posting your message didn’t have any buttons at all (or at least not nearly as many as there are now), but it did have a place you could click for Help that would bring up a list of all the available VB tags. Am I remembering right? And if so, is the help screen/document that lists all the available tags still around anywhere, accessible from the reply screen?

When I began posting on the Straight Dope, we had to chisel our remarks into rock and send it by dinosaur, and we were happy!
A help button would be useful, you have a good point.

A link to the VB standard help screen for VB codes is near the bottom of every page. Locate the “Forum Jump” dropdown near the bottom of the page at the right margin. A section titled “posting rules” is straight across from it at the left margin. The caption “BB code is On” is within that section and is the link to the help page.

Cool.
Thanks!

The answer to the OP is [del]yes[/del] no.

Well by-golly, look at that. Thanks for the heads up.
