Can you divide artichokes in September in California?

I am talking about the peninsula region of the S.F. Bay Area.

My father is a consummate gardener, and he owes his continuing good health in large part I think to the many wonderful things that have always been happy to grow in his garden.

In recent years, my mother has developed Alzheimer’s, and my dad finds himself spending a great deal of time caring for her. So one of my brothers and I plan to show up in September and do a bunch of garden work.

I’m pretty sure that the artichoke bushes haven’t been divided in years. I found this great site detailing how to do so, but it says that this should be done in winter.

If I do it in early fall, will it kill the bushes?

At the very bottom of the site you referenced it is mentioned, “Any questions or suggestions are greatly appreciated.” Email at support@newworldseedcompany.com

The site is run by a small group of professional farmers and avid home gardeners. Let us know how they respond.

And here I thought this was going to be one of those “wacky laws” threads.

Or something along the lines of “Colorless green ideas sleep furiously.” :frowning:
