Can you help diagnose my cat?

His right pupil is dilated and he is having a lot of trouble breathing. Despite medication to help him breathe, he is still laboring to draw breath. Those are his only external symptoms. I think his trouble breathing is due to fluid accumulating in his lungs. He’s been like this for about a week now. I keep hoping he’ll get better but so far he hasn’t improved.

We have no idea what brought this on. Head trauma? Poison? I know it’s not much to go on but does anyone have any ideas or suggestions? Has anyone had a cat with these symptoms? Any help would be appreciated. Thank you.

Poison is unlikely. Both of his pupils would be blown. Head trauma is possible since it is only one pupil. I am very sorry about your cat. If your description is correct he will suffer respiratory failure shortly. What did the vet say?

the vet said it could be pneumonia or it could be something else. She didn’t know what the “something else” might be.

all we know is that he has fluid in his lungs. He’s getting theophylline to help him breathe. We were giving him prednisone earlier, because of the swelling associated with the suspected head trauma. this really, really sucks. I’m going to run him over to the emergency vet now and get him in the oxygen box. that seems to help a little.

If his head is swollen, pneumonia is probably not a good diagnosis. I love all living things and I extend my great sympathy to you for yout kitten.

Does your cat go out and has he been in a scrap ?

A neighbours cat had similar symptons and it turned out to be an abcess near the eye, whicht the cat was very lucky to keep.

The vet said that had the abcess burst into the cat instead of outward and so evacuating the wound site the outcome would not have been so good.

Cats are very tough and this one, from being at death’s door, was up and about in literally a few hours after the abcess was cleared. It suffered no obvious lasting effects either.

He’s still hanging in there. The emergency vet took another x-ray. Turns out the fluid is not in his lungs but inside the chest cavity itself. She drew off a lot of the fluid to help him breathe. The vet said it looks like my cat has FIP (Feline Infectious Peritonitis), or possibly, congestive heart failure.

Sigh.

At least he’s breathing a little easier. I expect we will go say goodbye to him some time today. thanks to those who responded.

My cat was dehydrated once, started with a runny eyes, he became very lazy, week later a little blood came from his nose. He was very depressed like. He’s ok now because of proper treatment.

If nothing can be done. Take him to the shooting range for some practice. Then he can rent a gun and buy a bullet.
