The TV show “For Love or Money” is set in a rather large house/mansion in Southern California. Obviously a 5-10 million dollar house, and they are only using it for a few weeks.
So does the production company just go out and rent these houses? Why are they for rent at all, if they are worth so much?
They usually find someone and pay them lots of money to move out for as long as production takes. John Travolta is shooting a movie here and some people we know are renting them their (very large) house for something like 25K a month.
Sure, they are just more likely to be advertised in, say, the WSJ classifieds than your local Gazette.
In some circumstances, you can essential rent a very expensive home for nothing, in exchange for being a caretaker. Useful for people with multiple homes, or who or away on business most of the year. We’re considering renting an extremely nice home from my husband’s boss’s boss, who is only in the US about 6 weeks every year, for very little, in exchange for sharing with him when he is stateside.
I wouldn’t be surprised either if they purchased the house and turned right round and sold it 2 months later, when filming was complete. Given the housing market in So Cal, and the notoriety of it being used for a tv show, they could probably make a tidy sum even with such a short ownership.
I live in a town where anything nice than a one bedroom shack could easily run a million. When large groups of college students get together to rent a four or five bedroom house, they often end up in places that would be considered “really expensive”.
Around these parts, people with large or interesting homes can list their homes with a service that movie producers and location scouts use for movies. In exchange for the “temporary inconvenience” they are paid and depending on the contract, guaranteed that their home will be restored to the condition they left it in. In some other cases, location scouts will just come and ask the resident.
People with big ole houses also rent to anyone who can afford it. Occasionally I hear of celebs renting their palace for so many years before buying it.
