Guys, I just finished reading David Gerrold’s THE MARTIAN CHILD, and like elfkin477, I HIGHLY recommend it.
I’m a straight guy with no kids or desire for kids (at the moment, anyway), but it doesn’t matter who you are or your sexual orientation, this book will touch you. Gerrold doesn’t dwell on being a single gay adoptive parent, but he is honest and upfront with his son about it (Gerrold identifies as gay, but from his ruminations following immediately thereafter, he seems more bisexual), and makes a point of not wanting the adoption agency to tell the boy, but to allow him to so so.
And he talks eloquently of his love for Steven Parent, the young man murdered by the Manson family. (In Bugliosi’s HELTER SKELTER, Gerrold is referenced by his real name Jerrold David Friedman, for those of you whom I may have lost there).
Find THE MARTIAN CHILD and read it! I’m glad I did.
