If not, do you know of any safe alternatives to temporarily change eye color?
Color contacs work but if you’re not used to wearing contacts then it really sucks getting them in and out. Plus they look pretty fake, especially up close.
Food coloring, kool aid, or any other product like that should not come into contact with your eyes, unless you’re trying to win a Darwin Award.

are there any cites round here? cuz i’ve thought about food coloring in the eyes as well (not doing it, mind you. but about the ramifications of doing it).
seeing as how food coloring is non-toxic, and hasn’t caused any irritation to other mucus membranes (my mouth has been blue as a motherfuck, with no ill consequences), will food coloring harm delicate corneal tissues?

If you put food coloring in your eye, methinks that your body would go, “Agh! There’s stuff in the eye! Quick, let’s flush it out!” and your eyes would tear and the color would run down your cheeks, rendering you the spitting image of Tammy Faye at the fall of the PTL.
Supposing the color wasn’t all flushed out, it would probably color your entire eye (not just the iris, which is what I think you want).
Oh, if I only had the guts to maybe sacrifice an eye for science :-).

If you go for coloured contacts, please please PLEASE get them through a licensed eye doctor. Friend of mine got a pair from a novelty mail-order… scratched his eyes so badly he had to remove them immediately, and his vision was blurry for a couple days.

You would certainly end up with more than just differently coloured irises (although maybe that’s the effect you were after). I think it’s a bad idea.
I was watching Stargate SG1 last night and they had a race of aliens with yellow eyes (the ‘whites’ were yellow); how was that done?

Apparently, there is a special type of coloured contact that covers the entire visible surface of the eye! :eek:
I forget precisely what they are called, but they’re widely used in movies and on television.
Oh yeah… even back in Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” days they had those. But it is hard to tell. Computer editing and contact technology both are very good to accomplish such a feat.

I wanna put food coloring in my eyes now. Green, actually. What a wonderously strange idea. Just think, if someone does this and damage happens, they could sleep well, knowing that soon General Foods International will start putting new warning labels on their product: “Food coloring. Not for use in eye.” 
But really, it doesn’t seem like it would do any harm… and yet, I feel compelled to not try it.

I don’t think they are using CG on Stargate (for the eyes, I mean); it looks more like some sort of cosmetic thing.
Is there any risk or possibility of the colourings penetrating the sclera and staining the inside of the eye? - if there is, then it could be nasty.
