Canada's Foreign Minister Runs NYC Marthon

The Glove & Mail has a story in their international section about Canada’s Foreign Minister (who’s our de facto equivalent to Tom Ridge for terrorism issues) who ran the NYC marathon on the weekend, wearing cool shades and a T-shirt that said: “Canada [heart] NYC.”

Foreign Affairs Minister John Manley, who recently returned from what he termed a “marathon” of diplomacy in the Middle East, visiting five countries in as many days, was one of 494 Canadians who tackled the 41.9-kilometre course.

Mr. Manley warmed up for the race Saturday morning, participating in the International Friendship Run beginning at the United Nations, where he carried a Canadian flag.

“In a way, a marathon is about resilience and determination, and that’s what New York calls for right now,” he said after yesterday’s run. "It’s definitely a poignant time to be here with such an affirmation.

“It was really inspirational. Just a marvellous experience. One I will savour once I have a good rest to think about it.”

Mr. Manley seemed disappointed in his time of about 4? hours.

But he joked that he would submit to race organizers the time he wished he had achieved.
