"Canadian" as pejorative?

I hate to say it but I noticed a lot of people I eat out with (Canadians) are bad tippers. I once had lunch with a friend at some greasy spoon we had identical meals. He tipped a little under two dollars on a fifteen dollar meal. I tipped six dollars, he was perplexed as to why I was tipping so much. I got the impression he wanted me to reduce my tip. I told him she busted her ass , served us well, and even manage to check on us mid-meal to make sure everything was ok. That’s why.

Oh I’m sure they do.

How did Florida enter into it? But no, IME in Florida, “Canadian” in a negative sense would be referring to French Canadians.

I think the meme that “Canadians are bad tippers” stems from the fact that in Canada, servers make minimum wage (at least), which is anywhere from $9.50 to $11. While most of the young people I know tip a standard 20%, a lot of older people tend to tip 10% or something like that. There’s no incentive on the part of the diner to “make up for” the underpayment of wages, and consequently no “need” to tip 20% standard.

I don’t think it means simple-minded. I’d read it as “mealy mouthed”, “unwilling to take a stand” - which can be part of the Canadian stereotype. Does that fit with how the priority list was actually written?

I think that here in Montreal, servers make less than minimum wage, though since I’m not a server and I don’t ask how much servers make, I don’t know for sure.

I tend to overtip because I’m bad at math.

Agreed

Richer" than us (US)? Having more “personal freedom than we do?” Having more “social capital” than we have?”

I can’t use “Canadian” as a pejorative anymore? Damn Canadians.

That’s sweet. In New York the sales tax is 8% (I think) so everyone just doubles it. But in cabs there’s no tax, so it’s easier just to move the dot and double, and then I get mad at self for over tipping when the driver’s a bum.

At 40%, you’re being unusually generous.

Standard in the US is now 20% for what you describe, which is just basic good service. (The typical waitperson does indeed bust his or her ass when the restaurant is busy, in which case he or she makes good tips on volume). It was 15% a few decades ago. Your friend is either a bit tight-fisted or just out of date.

I’m sure there’s a whole thread here just on tipping.
It was 10% a few decades ago.
20% is more than enough.
Six bucks on a $15 meal??? Wholly crap! I mean, Holy crap! McDonalds is looking pretty good. Oh, wait, that is a $15 meal.

Yeah, I’m not sure what we’re supposed to call black people in Canada? African-American Canadians?

I usually use thier name.
I’ve also heard Canadians referred to in Florida pejoratively as Snowbirds or "Birds for short.

Bingo.

When I worked as a hostess, whenever I discovered a server was a racist asshole who complained about “canadians”…I would purposely sit black people in their section whenever I had the chance.

I’ve never seen or heard of this and I’m having a tough time picturing it, do you have a video bychance? Also why can’t they just say black?

The priorities were basically daily processes first, then weekly, then monthly. I wouldn’t describe it using either of the phrases that you quoted.

Re the NYC “black” hand sign.

  1. I of course have no video of it.
  2. I know quite a few cops.
  3. If you cannot imagine when it would be used, you cannot imagine when any code word/sign would be used.

No need for the snark. I’m wondering what circumstances a cop would need to indicate someone was black where they weren’t allowed to say it out loud, and also where there were people around who didn’t know the hand code. It’s perfectly okay for a cop to say they’re looking for a suspect who is a black male, so why the need for a hand code? Try not to be a jerk when explaining it to me this time.

And why “of course” there is no video of it? Since I am not a new york cop, for all I know the hand signal is 30 years old and has made it into movies or TV. When people ask a question, it’s by definition and admission they are ignorant of something and want to know more.

I’m kind of offended by this thread, but I can’t decide if I’m more offended on behalf of Canadians, or on behalf of blacks.

Anyone using “Canadian” to secretly describe “blacks” is not the kind of person I’d want to be associated with on many fronts. The whole thing leaves me a little disgusted.

That’s just because the haters heard Canadians in Florida call themselves Snowbirds, and were to thick too come up with an original perjorative term. :smack:

Are you one of those people who thinks talking about something is the same thing as advocating it?
