Canadian Club Time Warp!

In the Classic column about hidden cases of Canadian Club Whiskey, Cecil proves that his omniscience includes the ability to see into the future. The column is dated February 2, 1979, yet the final paragraph references events in 1981.

At last, proof of a Supreme Being! It’s a good thing He’s on *our *side!

Columns are usually updated when they’re edited to appear in one of the books (which you can order from the website!) And, when the Classic columns are brought up for current display, there is sometimes a bit of updating. I’m not sure which was the case with this particular column, but it’s not uncommon.

'Course, if you want to subscribe to the theory of Cecil’s omniscience, he won’t object.

Additionally, today’s McDonald’s article is dated in the 70s and references data from the 90s. I commented about this phenomenon a while ago due to anachronistic references to popular culture, which for some reason screams poor editing more than newer data does; maybe I’m just used to seeing them by now.

I really, really, really would like to see some sort of mention of where the online article is taken from, not just the original publication date, given that one of these sorts of threads tends to pop up every time there’s an out of place reference in an old column.

In the opening of the letter, it refers to “in the 70’s”, leading me to believe that the date is incorrect. I doubt that if it was written in 1979, that term would be used.

Well… Canadian Club’s Hide a Case contest is back and ready for the social media age.

I’m starting to drool!

We have got to get a Doper on the team.

Wait, you’re a mod. Do you not consider k.smith0908’s post to be spam (especially given that it was repeated in two other threads)?

(Edited to add that I’m amazed that we’re being spammed by a major corporation.)

We’re leaving this one mention of the contest – because of the Classic Column – I have removed the cross-posts elsewhere.

And we’ll be, um, counseling Mr./Ms. Smith.

Good luck with the contest.

What, um, exactly, leads you to that conclusion?

I actually lived a few blocks from the Hiram Walker Distillery in Windsor Ont. where Canadian Club is made…

Let me tell you… when they were Brewing/Distilling it was the most wonderful smell you could ever experience… It was a lot like a bakery… but richer…

I had a friend who had a friend who was an employee (on second thought… the guy who used to bring that stuff by was definitely not an employee of anywhere… but that is where he said he got it… lol… shady people) at HW`s and used to get us these half full gallon milk jugs of this stuff we called moonshine… the employee referred to it as “distillate”… The way it was explained to me was that when they made a big batch that tested too high for alcohol %… they would boil/remove (i don’t know how exactly) some of the alcohol of to lower the %… that was saved for other batches that tuned out to be a low %… every once in a while these jugs would some how find their way to us…

I`m not positive about all this… anytime I was around this stuff we were drinking it and things could get a little blue… but it was some powerful stuff for sure… definitely not swish… another whiskey making by product I have drank before…
