We did too: Voted in the Advance Poll Today (Canadian Federal Election)

Don’t we all… Well, I know I do.
I blame Wile E. Coyote.
Election time has come and Harper is gone. Defeated Tories are giving final interviews to show that they are normal humans and not cold/incompetent, talking-point spewing automatons (ala what John Baird did in Feb). And I tells ya, surprisingly, Paul Calandra actually seems like a fully function human being, quite the shock considering how awfully bad he conducted himself in Parliament (his public apology was forgotten in a month). However…
Chris Alexander does not come off well, he takes no responsibility for his role in slow/no rolling non-Christian Syrian refugee sponsorship applications and even doubles down on his “this whole thing was a media witch hunt against me” shtick he’s been peddling for close to two years now.
Today I attended a seminar on the changes to auto insurance in Ontario on 1 June 2016. In short, we’re all fucked, for statutory accident benefits are being slashed, and the pre-judgement interest rates are being set so low that the insurance companies will make a lot of money by stalling as long as they can. The take-home points were (1) purchase extended coverage if you can (note that both the plaintiff and defence personal injury lawyers at the seminar recommended this and have done so personally), and (2) sue under tort ASAP if at all possible. Grrrrrrrrrr!
The seminar started off with a Cracked video that has nothing to do with the Ontario changes, but gets the idea across of what we can expect.
If the current government of Ontario is doing anything, in any area, you can be sure they’re fucking it up. So of course they’ll fuck up auto insurance.
Seems to be the fallout of capping rates – slashed benefits.
That’s going to put greater strain on the public purse re. social assistance and Ontario disability support plan.
The new Cabinet has been announced. The most interesting from my viewpoint (my being an asshole for hire in a city where aboriginal conflict with the law is a major issue) is our new Minister of Justice Jody Wilson-Raybould, who once was the regional chief of the B.C. Assembly of First Nations, and started out as a Crown attorney. Those are excellent credentials for some whose job will to a high degree involve dealing with the truly horrid problems Canada is facing regarding aboriginal justice. Of course the issues are far broader than simple laws and enforcement, but at least there will be someone who actually gets it.
I have worked with Ms (now The Hon.) Wilson-Raybould in her capacity as Regional Chief for BC (I work at the AFN) and I can honestly say that she is an intelligent and hardworking individual. She’s going to have a tough job but she is capable of a reasonable and unbiased approach.
All in all, I like the choices made for Cabinet.
Martin’s Minister of Finance, and a Sikh warrior for Minister of Defence. Wow!
That’s really good to hear, Das Glasperlenspiel.
My error re McCallum as having been Min Finance – he had been Min Rev. Either way, good to see someone with experience on the money side of government.
Interesting that some of the ministerial titles are different. That usually indicates at least some department name changes, or even a government reorganization to be announced later. I’ll have to watch for relevant Orders-in-Council.
My current fav is the way that they paid the teachers unions to show up and negotiate. And if The Sun is correct, I am not holding my breath, then Ontario have given elementary teachers perpetual sick leave.
The teaching unions and Liberals have been bribing each other for years. It’s not a bug, it’s a feature.
I note Kirsty Duncan, our new Minister of Science, is no longer claiming to be a Nobel Prize winner, which is a nice change.
She served on the Nobel Prize-winning Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change.
I believe you may be referring to an old posting on her facebook page.
I put this in the same sour grapes pile as “Al Gore claimed he invented the internet.”
You really should aspire to be better than this. Seriously.
Conservatives are going to pick an interim leader today. The position will pay an extra $80,000 per year, on top of the $163,000 MP salary. Nice.
Each potential candidate will have three minutes to make their case in front of caucus. A three minute job interview. For an extra $6600/month.
We have no idea who is allowed to vote, and who will be making this decision. I personally wonder how much power Harper still wields within the party. We’ll see soon if the CPC decides to double down on the continuation of The Harper Party.
I suppose Bob Rae never got a raise as the interim Liberal leader after Ignatieff?
Was he also picked after a three minute interview? How much influence did Ignatieff have on the selection?
