Canadoper Isolation Café 2020

Not to mention Harper’s not caring about the environment.
And his dismissal of the arts as unimportant (which is possibly the event that got me more interested in politics, and more determined to protect the arts and the environment by making sure Harper didn’t get re-elected.)

I remember the government continuously giving non-answers to simple, daily policy and administration questions in the House. It was done for absolutely no other reason than pugnacious gamesmanship and (possibly) deep contempt for parliamentary practice and customs. Every question would be replied by Paul Calandra talking about his day, or his laundry, or rephrased into an attack on random things like Israel. It was a daily course in embarrassing contempt. Very Trumpian, the death of irony, stuff.

The farce became such a daily embarrassment that Paul Calandra was made to give a tearful apology… but went back to his (toned down) non-answers after a few weeks. His apology was so convincing to me that I thought he might be a stonecold sociopath.

We have a whale. A humpback whale has just been seen here in the St-Laurent river in Montreal, near the Cartier bridge.

Pretty neat, but also sad in that it’s probably lost. Let’s hope it finds its way home.

Apparently they sometimes swim into fresh water to kill saltwater parasites, so it may head back to sea on its own.

Trudeau pauses for 21 seconds after being asked about Trump and the protests south of the border. https://www.cbc.ca/player/play/1745421379773?fbclid=IwAR0afY4NebHgChNiu3pxPtNXWP95_jEYZEOO0bqorgoF4akvP8meXsXrQDE This is easily my favourite Justin Trudeau moment ever.

Meanwhile in Ontario and Quebec, the premiers of those provinces try to deny that systemic racism exists in their areas.
Some are also trying to deny that racism, systemic or otherwise, exists in Canada.

It’s the very things like these that make racism so hard to fight against in Canada.

And now also Stockwell Day has lost a job, maybe two, for insensitive comments about racism.

Sadly, the Montreal whale has been sighted -for the last time.

RIP whale.

Hello fellow Canadopers, I thought I would pop my head in and say hi. Hope you are all coping ok as we head into a likely brutal winter of isolation (and discontent).

Hello, Registered at Last! Haven’t “seen” you in a while (the Tulip Festival Dopefest, I think)! Hope you are doing well, along with all our fellow Ottawans. Spouse and I been pretty well hunkered down since this whole thing started. Our biggest excitement is going for a walk or going to the grocery store. And the excitement of getting a flu shot!

I am not looking forward to winter.

Yeah, I’ve been starting to stockpile stuff in anticipation of another lockdown. I don’t watch too much TV on a regular basis so I now have a way to keep myself occupied with Disney+, Amazon Prime and Netflix.

Yeah, yesterday I shopped for two weeks, as I am planning on staying away from any stores for a bit. I have the freezer and pantry stacked up good. Hubs is still working, but it could get closed down if things worsen. It will be a different lockdown in the cold months, for certain!

8 months now since my gaming group last met, ditto for my modelling club. I think that Covid fatigue has set in, as, after wearing a mask every time I left the house since mid-March, I have several times in the last few weeks forgotten to put one on before I got out of the car, and had to go back and get it.

Has anyone else been getting that advert from CIBC? It’s a banner ad that I’ve got at the top of the SDMB.

It starts as a red stripe across the top of the page.

Then there’s a white circle right in the middle.

Then there’s a spinning black cross in the middle of the white circle.

It stops spinning and it’s clear that it’s just a simple cross.

However every time this has come up, I’ve had an instinctive reaction: “it’s a swastika flag! oh wait, it isn’t. Quite.”

I sent in a “comment” on their “contact us” page and asked why CIBC is advertising with a Nazi-wannabe flag. I don’t know if it’s just a coincidence, but I’ve not seen it since.

As a Charter Member in good standing, I don’t get ads. You’re a Charter Member too, so why are you seeing ads? Maybe you should ask a Mod or an Admin about what’s going on.

At any rate, I’d be interested in what you hear from CIBC.

I’ve been getting banner ads since the changeover. They don’t bother me, because they are relatively unobtrusive, and frankly, for more reputable outfits than the one we used to get on the old platform.

I won’t get any feedback because I cou in d only find a generic « how are we doing » contact box on the CIBC webpage. It didn’t ask for my e-mail address, which I was cool with.

Hi. I’m in Montreal. I haven’t seen friends or family in over half a year and I’m trying to remember what human touch feels like.

I’m glad to be connected to others online.

I don’t really know where I’m going with this post, other than to say hi.

Good to see you, EmilyG! Hope all’s well!

Hmm. I’ve stopped getting the adverts. Don’t know why.

This is sad:
