If cow’s meat is considered beef, pigs have pork, and deer got venison; then if we ate humans (us), what would our meat be called?
Sweet Meat?
Treif.
IIRC, it was called “Long Pig” in the South Pacific.
Soylent Green?
Actually, I’ve heard that “long pig” thing before. It makes sense, since human meat supposedly tastes something like pork.
(Didn’t Cecil cover the “What does human meat taste like?” question at one point? I’ve searched the archives, but so far come up empty.)
Manbeef of course.
The words “beef” and “pork” are derived from the Old French words for the animals. Venison comes from the Old French for “hunting” or “game”. (Note that, unlike current English words for the animals, all the words for the meat come from the French.) So maybe we could use the Old French word for “man” or “human”.
The modern French for “man” is l’homme, I think, and the Old French is probably similar. My guess: call human meat “lom”, “hom”, or just “om”?
I’d like a hom sandwich on sourdough, please.
I’ve also heard of human flesh being sold as “Two-legged mutton” in Europe in the iddle/dark ages, during times of famine. Sorry, no cite. It may not even ever have happened.
BTW, according to an old science book I got when I was a kid, the survivors of the “Alive” plane crash in the Andies reported human flesh as tasting somewhat like beef. I don’t have the book’s title, and I can’t vouch for it’s authenticity, but I can get it off of my bookshelf, if anyone’s interested.
Ranchoth
Er, that would be “Alive!” by Peter Paul Reade, I think.
AKA Long Pig, hiding the evidence.
Don’t they call it Eucharist in the Bible? I remember God made the Hebrews eat their children too. Not very kosher.
Curiously, the answer according to Cecil is Spam
Not!
Say what?
;j
I believe it was Old Testament Deuteronomy when some city is under siege. God was punishing them for something (being Jews?) and somehow He arranged it so that they ate their children. I don’t know if that means cannibalism is God-approved though.
I’d like to see a citation on that.
Chapter and verse, if you will.
I believe that electrokungfu may be talking about Deuteronomy 28; the blessings for obeying the Lord’s commands and the curses if you don’t:
But of course this isn’t an account of actual events, it’s a promise/threat, and given that it’s part of the curse for not following God, I think we can answer:
In the negative.
Thanks for the citation. I take it to mean that God may not smile on cannibalism he is not adverse to causing it. If the all-powerful forces you to eat your young then he gives his tacit approval since he created the situation and can stop it yet does not. That Yates lady should have ate her kids instead of drowning them! A waste of womb fruits.
