We bought some brown eggs here, and I was thinking about how brown chickens lay brown eggs, and white chickens lay white eggs, and I was wondering, what kind of internal process that changes the feathers of a chicken also changes an eggshell?
I think it’s more complicated than that. I’ve seen blue and green chicken eggs, but I don’t think I’ve ever seen blue or green chickens. And I’m pretty sure some white chickens can lay brown eggs, and vice-versa.

It depends on the breed of chicken.

I believe this is true as well, although I haven’t found any definite confirmation on the web. Certainly for most birds, egg color bears little relation to the color of the bird itself.

I think you must be thinking of Alferd (or Alfred) Packer , the “Colorado Cannibal,” who alledgedly said:
Although Packer was sentenced to death, it was not carried out. He was imprisoned but eventually paroled.
As a grad student at the University of Colorado, I had many a Packerburger at the Alferd G. Packer Memorial Grill.
Yes, I was thinking of Packer! Thanks for giving me the Straight Dope.
Great name for a grill… those crazy UC students.
Be sure to not eat the brains .
