can't edit your own post?!?!?

WHY!
and why does it not know who i am. a friend uses my computer but has a different account and i get logged in as somebody else, even on my own account!

Editing of posts is disabled at this board. To make sure you are signed on as the correct username, go to the message board home page, sign out, and then sign in again. My recommendation is to always sign out from the message board when you are done posting.

As to the ‘WHY!’ have a look here, which includes a link to yet another previous answer to the same question.

I have to ask, though: you get logged in as somebody else, even on your own account? Eh?

i see - it is true that some here get a bit excited, but on other bbs, the post will say “last edited…”

it seems that since my friend did not log out, when i went to the site, it stayed on as my neighbor. i gave him his own screen name on my aol account.

thanks,
steve

I daydreamed a possible solution to the editing problem a while back, but have so far been too lazy to suggest it to Jelsoft.

Suppose it were possible to edit a post, but doing so replaced but didn’t obliterate the previous version. The software would have to accept the edited post as a new one, but display it im place of the old one with a hyperlink (saying “this post has been edited, click here to see previous versions”) that would open up a pop-up window showing the editing history of the post.

Mangetout, overall that’s a great idea. If you don’t suggest it I might.

The only problem I could see is people abusing the editing to fix typos. On a board as populated as this I could see the server coming to a standstill putting up reposts by people who said “your” instead of “you’re.”

Not too different than people having to create entire new posts now to post ‘corrections’ of that nature, except that with an option to edit people might feel more free to utilize the feature.

I see the disabled editing feature as incentive to proofread my posts. If I don’t want to look like an idiot with my botched coding, poor spelling and grammar, and improperly formed sentences, then I better proofread.

I’d wager an editing feature would most often be used to correct grammar and spelling and mistakenly omitted/included words. If that’s the case, then I don’t think it’s worth the effort to implement a disabled-editing workaround. Posters here are smart-- within the context of a post, they can figure out where a poster mistyped. For those compelled to post a follow-up correction, they can. It’s not necessary to change anything in the software.

Editing your own post is for loosers!
