Can't have a username with "ed" in it?

I tried to register with the name “Upgraded to Critical”.

The system said, in obvious error “That name is already in use. If your name is Ed and you’ve forgotten your password, click here.”

Not that I care now for myself. Just reporting a bug.

That said, the username system does seem to have trouble with some words that end in ‘aded.’

Oh-oh – am I in trouble now?

One of the forums I frequent is hosted by Ezboard and once I had occasion to refer to a poem of Andrew Marvell’s, Upon Appleton House. This is what appeared in the post - *Upon *****on House.

It turns out that the word applet is forbidden on Ezboard, something to do with protection against hostile Java applets. (We’ll now see whether vBulletin has the same taboo!)

On preview: guess not, but it does go to show that certain combinations of letters can be a problem with some boards.

We were about to send you an email - we need the d’s back.

There are no SDMB users having ‘applet’ as a substring of their username:

Looking for users with, for example ‘faded’ as a substring of their username returns a different error:

I think you’re right about there being a problem with ‘some combinations of letters’, at least in usernames.

:: sigh ::

Okay, here ya go:

At least you’re not fey. Or twee.

I originally tried to sign up under my usual screename, “shadeedge” and I got the Ed error. Definetly something to do with the “adeed” I guess.

Don’t you people get it? It’s because of Ed Zotti! He has to be the only Ed on the board. It’s a plot!fnord. That is all.

Sneezy

I’ll be fine until the board becomes dyslexic and throttles me.

I’ll throw C K Dexter Havn in its path.

Problem solved.

I think you’ve got it! Many years ago there were people who would sign up with names like Ed Zitti and Ed Zoti and then say something outrageous. So they blocked all new “Ed”'s. Those others were simply tripping over that old rule.
Or so I’m told.

Okay, you prospective ed’s out there, try it now.

Tempting, that lure of Zottiness.
So plump, appealing.
Full of sock-a-licious goodyness.
Yet Still, my beating heart!
I’d be banned.
The Creampuff crumbles.
Mere dust remains. :frowning:
