Once in a while, a movie trailer comes along that is so strange, your head nearly explodes trying to comprehend it. The latest one to do so for me is Gooby. What we have here appears to be an attempt at an E.T.-style buddy film. However, it fails on multiple levels. The fact that the title character is not cute but rather looks like a failed attempt to cross Fozzie Bear with Rodney Dangerfield. The incredibly strange sentence “A family movie about a boy with a very active imagination to whom something remarkable is about to happen,” which almost sounds like Engrish but is even too good for that. The supposedly comic scenes which for some reason play without sound. The cast credits in Comic Sans MS. The wagon scene which looks ripped out of Calvin and Hobbes. I don’t know where you came from, Gooby, but I’d wish you’d go back. “A uniquely independent studio” indeed.
They even ripped off the logo (Pebble Beach). Bad, bad, bad.
Here’s areview.
The really amazing things-
this has actually won awards,
it had two frequently-working celebs that I know (Coltrane and Levy),
the visuals are crisp and clear.
I expected none of these.
:dubious: Did YOU do that?
If so, you’re wonderful!
I don’t know if receiving “five doves” from the Dove Foundation constitutes an award by any stretch of the imagination. Then again, I don’t know if Gooby constitutes a film by any stretch of the imagination.
I plead the 5th!
This played Kansas City’s AMC Studio 30 for less than one week. I think that may be a record.
Edit: Just watched trailer. Featuring Eugene “I’m Not Getting Residuals From SCTV” Levy.
Movies like this make me really miss MST3K.
I couldn’t make it through the trailer but from what I saw it looks like they found a shelved made-for-tv movie from 1990 and decided to release it for shits and giggles.
