Can't track down a movie; Chinese/Hong Kong buddy cop variety

Hello all,

I need help tracking down a movie. I watched it back in the mid 90’s, I think 1997. It was a buddy cop film from either China or Hong Kong. I seem to remember it in Cantonese, but I’m unsure of this. I don’t remember any of the actors.

Here’s a few random scenes and details that I do remember:

  • The main bad guy was a total bad-ass, almost Terminator like. Definitely not a mad scientist.
  • There was a scene where the two buddy cops were trying to avoid the bad guy at a store. So they put buckets over their heads to be unrecognizable. I think they did cartwheels too.
  • In the final showdown, Cop #1 hits the Bad Guy with an ax, but the Bad Guy keeps coming. Cop #1 gives up, cowering to the ground, resigning to certain death, while the Bad Guy stands over him. Cop #2 then retrieves one final bullet (maybe dangling from his necklace?), puts it into his revolver, and shoots the Bad Guy in the back of the head. Bad guy slumps to the ground. Cop #1 is saved.

I’ve tried searching keywords, like Hong Kong, Chinese, buddy cop, bucket over head, cartwheels, but haven’t found anything since my recollection is so vague. I’m hoping someone here has seen the movie and can match the bits and pieces from my memory with the title.

Thanks!

Bump for the evening crew

Was this a new movie when you saw it? I mean, did you see it in the theatre or did you see it on video? I’m just trying to nail down a rough time that it was made so I can eliminate older and/or newer films.

ETA: Also, was it a comedy buddy cop movie (like the Pom Pom flicks) or was it a serious cop drama?

Hi Snowboarder Bo,

I watched it on video.

I seem to recall it was somewhere between Pom Pom and something more serious. There were certainly silly parts, but not quite as goofy as Pom Pom. Maybe like a “Lethal Weapon” level of seriousness.
