Capitalist greed, on a personal level.

OK, I need a little advice.

I came up with a concept for the best Nike commercial ever.

Very cool, very current, in a few months, and very specifically useful to Nike, and only Nike.

So, my question is, is there a chance in hell that Nike would pay me for it, and if so, how would I get their attention?

Because there is no way I am giving this idea to them, and that means I need a real good reason to believe that I am not going to just get ripped off.

Any suggestions?

Tris

Listening to friends who work in advertising, I understand that they probably have a contract with an ad agency that handles everything for them. If that’s the case, you’re screwed. You might be able to pitch it to that agency, but unless your idea is really genius, it likely won’t go anywhere.

They [either] really want a return on their investment and unless you’ve got a track record (and research to prove that your idea will work), you’ll never get anywhere. I’ve had friends who put a lot of resources into making a commercial for a company with the same idea you had and it didn’t go anywhere, as in probably never even opened.

Should you decide to actually pitch it yourself, your best bet to keep from getting ripped off is to 1) make as much physical as you can (i.e. write it down) and 2) keep documentation on everything. Even so, if they take your idea and modify it in any way, they’re likely to get away with it. That is, I understand, one of the risks of the industry.
