Captain America 2 - Open Spoilers

Actually, Evans has another interview somewhere that said the “done with acting” comment was taken out of context and exaggerated. According to *that *interview, he clarified that wants to try his hand at directing ALSO, but not to give up acting entirely, and that he was game as long as Marvel wants him. (ninjaed by Bakhesh!)

And I was wrong about 9 - you’re right, it was Shaw. Evans is signed for 6.

Hmm, that would put the timing right to transition between those two in the Cap 3/Avengers 3 area. That would be a really nifty character hook, and I have a suspicion they’re going to be testing out the logistics of transitioning characters with RDJ in Avengers 2 - my working theory is that Iron Man’s going to be replaced with Vision so RDJ can retire to a behind-the-scenes Q role (ie, not be an active/main character).

Interesting stuff ahead!

Very interesting article in today’s Business Week on Marvel and Kevin Feige. Some slightly spoilery info there as well, like

Thanos in GotG and the strong suggestion that Black Widow is getting her own movie real soon.

in addition to the wall of future movie stretching until 2028.

I’m trying to decide if the fact that the list looks evidently doctored was done on purpose so people would see “their” name, or sloppy, or what. That Camilo José Cela in the Spanish list was missing a yellow hilite to be even more visible :stuck_out_tongue:

I liked the fighting; among other things, I liked that Cap actually hit people - seriously, sometimes in comics it seems as if all he does is frisbee the shield around and people fall from the sonic boom or something, in this movie he hits people, kicks people, stabs people… yeah. Mo’ ass kicking, less posing. And Natasha’s boots are believable, they’re the kind that’s actually more comfortable to run and move around in than most shoes.

Ok, now I know I’m getting sick. Almost 3 hours ago I started coughing, and it’s getting worse and I’m getting tired, warm, and light headed.

I first read that as “Natasha’s boobs are believable” and it took me about 7-10 seconds to parse it out properly based on the rest of the sentence.

I want to believe

It’s not a list of things Captain America thinks are important, it’s a list of things people who have met Captain America thinks are important. Apparently, Cap’s recently met a British tour group or something.

He didn’t. It was Maria Hill’s plan.

Looking back, my biggest problem with the movie was the way they introduced Falcon’s jetpack. I can suspend my disbelief enough to buy that Iron Man’s armor is always just enough ahead of the curve that the US army can’t build a regiment of the things, regardless of how long Iron Man is supposed to have been active in the public eye. But the Falcon rig was military issue - Philips used it to do air rescue when he was in the service. And then it was discontinued. They steal the last remaining device (off camera, which I loved) right before the third act of the film.

Why the hell doesn’t the US have an entire air corps composed of soldiers wearing Falcon packs? Those things are amazing! Why would they stop building those?!

Also, super advanced armaments on the helicarriers that can’t even deal with a bit of discontinued military hardware.

I understand that Hydra didn’t necessarily need those things to stay in the air for much longer than necessary to kill the 20MM targets but presumably the SHIELD designers thought it would be able to defend itself against threats much bigger than a guy in a flying suit.

Not to mention that, even though not a super, Sam can take a huge amount of g-forces with absolutely no mechanical support. Some of those turns, should have ripped his arms off.

Well, after the well-publicized scandals of jet-packed units spying on nudist colonies and women’s dorms, and the accident rates when unit members would hot-dog in them, and then that one time when a drunk airedale buzzed the White House…

Not only that, but it seemed a little weird to me that the helicarriers had their “brains” (or at least the places where their programming could easily be changed by swapping out one small plastic thing for another small plastic thing) out in the open where they’d be relatively easy to get at, instead of buried in the belly somewhere behind several thick steel (guarded) locked doors.

I saw the movie last night and thought it was great. Way better than Iron Man 3 or Thor 2.

Things I liked:

Return of Hydra. I did not see that one coming. I had just figured on the bad guys being run of the mill corrupt government types. Now we know why Garry Shandling was such a dick in Iron Man 2.

The Falcon/Cap friendship. Even in real life you sometimes just meet a friend that you get along with right away.

Maria Hill being in on the action. Again, I did not expect Cobie Smulders to do anything beyond a token appearance.

Steve Rogers’ list. Note that the only item crossed off was Star Wars.

Steve understanding the War Games reference.

Matrix Zola was pretty cool.

Proto-Crossbones.

The SHIELD civil war.

The inscription on Nick Fury’s gravestone.

Things I didn’t like:

Needed more Winter Soldier. I’m assuming this movie is setting things up for Cap 3, maybe Avengers 2, but considering his name is in the title, we got to see surprisingly little of him.

It felt like Scarlett Johansson was phoning this one in. Normally she’s pretty good, but she seemed pretty wooden this time around.

Falcon’s action scenes were a little over the top, IMO. As was mentioned upthread, those maneuvers would have torn him apart and I found it a little hard to swallow that a glorified jet pack could out perform a pilot in a jet. But I’m a sucker for aerial dogfight scenes so I’ll let it go. Also the jet shooting up its own mothership was kind of lame.

All the “lets do all our secret espionage stuff and assassinations in broad daylight, in full view of the public, in Washington DC.” Seeing the reaction after the Naval Yard shooting in DC not that long ago, Nick Fury’s assassination attempt would have put the entire city on lockdown before the car chase was even over. Despite being completely overwhelmed, at least we got to see regular cops reacting to the Chitauri attack in Avengers, but apparently running gun battles & car chases in the nation’s capitol doesn’t rate very high on the threat list in the MCU.
That said, I am definitely going to see this one again in theaters very soon. Cap has always been one of my favorite comic book characters and seeing him kick ass on the big screen is even better.

I was okay with that, since the whole Hydra plot revolved around the idea that all those times cities were put on “lockdown” were, themselves, part of the Hydra plot to make people paranoid and fearful enough to accept Hydra’s dominion. If they have enough control over the police and military in institute those lockdowns, they have have enough to prevent them from being put in place when it serves their purposes.

I hope there’s a back up of reel-to-reel Armin Zola somewhere. I’d love to see him get his bipedal TV robot suit.

I’m guessing you don’t actually read the comics then, and you DEFINITELY have not read any of the Ultimate(s) comics, which a lot of the Marvel Cinematic Universe is based upon.

The way I understood it was that Hydra had taken over command of SHIELD, and was running false flag attacks and terror operations in order to stir up trouble to give SHIELD more leeway & the freedom to build things like the Insight fleet. Once Insight was launched, that was going to be the big grab for power by eliminating anyone who might stand in their way. Even the POTUS was on kill list shown on the computer screen. Their influence was limited to SHIELD, and aside from a few well placed people like Garry Shandling’s character, they didn’t have much reach elsewhere.

I thought for sure Hydra was going to claim to be responsible for the Ten Rings terrorist group and be behind the events of Iron Man 3. If I’m remembering my comics correctly, isn’t AIM an offshoot of Hydra?

And yes, Robo-TV-Zola would be cool as a villain. It could happen in Avengers 2, since we already know that Hydra is going to have some hand in those events.

I can’t believe I forgot to post this, but I was so,so glad to see the WWII Cap costume back in action. I thought the Avengers outfit was a serious downgrade. His SHIELD uniform was pretty cool though.

Not looking at spoilers, just want to know - 3D - Yes or No?

StG

I went to the IMAX 3D midnight screening only because I expected it to have the most enthusiastic excitable audience (the regular version and the regular 3D version already had 7:00pm and 10:00pm screenings before their Thursday midnight screenings, the IMAX midnight screening was the very first IMAX screening).

The audience did have a great energy, so I’m happy with my choice, but seeing it in 3D adds nothing. You’ll be perfectly happy with the regular version.

I saw it tonight in Imax 3D. I can’t tell you whether the 3D adds anything but the movie just kicked so many kinds of ass on so many levels.
Right now I am ready to say it is THE best of the Marvel movies so far. It’s not just a great superhero movie, it’s a damn good MOVIE. I am in awe.

I loved this movie. I was a big fan of the first CA and was surprised how this ended up being a sequel to that as much as one to The Avengers.

It is good of Marvel to give these franchises different feels. You wouldn’t confuse a CA movie with a Thor movie with an Iron Man movie and that is how it should be.

Of course we got our taste of what is coming in Avengers 2 but I wonder if the Hydra AI will also factor into it given that Ultron is himself an AI.

And everyone who objects, raise your hand… no, get it out of your lap, perv.

Actually, the whole vibe as they walked into that facility was the same as the ending of T3, where John Connor and the girl walk into the antiquated Cold War-era control bunker.

But yeah, this was a good one all the way through. The reviews I glanced at said “darker and more adult” and that’s a pretty good summation.

Marvel genuinely has me awed at their Pixar-like string of getting-it-rights.

Concur. It’s a conversion, not shot-in, and while there are a few nice scenes the 3D adds absolutely nothing to the movie. Which is as it should be.
