Captain America, the first Avenger

There are other references to enhanced cognition/eidetic memory - such as coming back with useful intelligence after a glance at a situation room map, without a pause in his rescue mission, with scores of soldiers shooting at him.

The real plothole is that the Skull ditches the Nazis early on (vaporizing a delegation of Nazis to make his point) and the Nazis … do nothing. They seem to allow the Skull and his minions to operate plants all over Europe. In fact, the Nazis are not really mentioned again.

You’d think the Nazis would be slightly peeved about the Skull’s plans, and less than enthusiastic about his opertations …

The two questions I had, after a second viewing, were:

Why was “Autopilot” written in English on the control panel?

Why was Bucky being kept in a separate room from everyone else?

About Nazis vs. Hydra: the Nazis are already fighting two enemies. Probably don’t have the material to fight a third foe with better tech.

The same reason all of the Germans spoke English with one another.

According to Google Translate, the German word for autopilot is Autopilot.

Wasn’t he dazedly reciting name, rank, and serial number? Maybe he was just the interrogation subject du jour.

That was my impression, too. He was being interrogated, or tortured.

A big reason it would be obvious that it was an old game is that it took place in 1941, before a lot of players were drafted. Any fan would know that any number of regular team members couldn’t be playing in 1943 because they were in Europe or the Pacific.

Except he doesn’t say “That’s an old game, so-and-so transferred to the Yankees and what’s-his-face got drafted”, he says “That’s an old game, I remember it, I was there”. And even remembers the date of it. Now, maybe the inconsistency of the roster got him to realize something was wrong, and probing that triggered the memory, but he’s still remembering that one specific game.

Steve may well have been a passionate baseball fan, as a lot of young men were and are, and I don’t see anything odd with him instantly recognizing the play-by-play of a game that he watched, in person, with rapt attention.

As for Nazis vs. HYDRA, the movie is hella long as it is. They simply couldn’t cram that much extra into it. You can assume that the Nazis were fighting HYDRA as well, or that their forces were tied up in the Western Front and couldn’t be bothered with the (seemingly) minor threat of Red Skull’s freaky little cult.

Agreed - I was pointing out that the present-day people’s choice of game was even more wrong than it seemed: it wouldn’t take a coincidence (Steve Rogers happening to have attended the particular game) to make it clear to him that it was a recording; all it would take was knowledge that any baseball fan would have had.

How did supposedly competent SHIELD make an error on the baseball game detail? Someone needs to be called out on that.

Because they were thinking like a lot of people in this thread - who’s going to remember one particular game? And it may have been the one they had a good recording off (since Steve would be likely to recognize the announcer’s voice and mannerism’s if they tried to fake that).

Some how I got the impression (& I can’t remember why) that they were using Bucky as a guinea pig for super-soldier serum. It might just have been speculation on my part to justify Bucky being able to hang with Cap as a sidekick.

I find it entirely believable that the German word for “autopilot” and the English word for “autopilot” is the same.

However, Google Translate can’t really be cited as the final word on the matter. If Google Translate does not recognize a word, it just spits out the same word back to you. This can be tested by typing a nonsense word in.

English to German translation for:
He goes to the thyredt*
Er geht auf die thyredt

*a word I just made up

Same for freetranslation.com and babelfish
(freetranslation gives “er geht zum thyredt”)

I’ve put in words that I would consider to be more commonly used than the word “autopilot” and Google Translate did not recognize the word. If Google Translate does not know the word “autopilot” the result will just be “autopilot”.

Now, “pilot” seems a common enough word that at least one of the three sites would recognize it. All three sites translate “pilot” as “pilot”.

So, yes, I’m inclined to believe that “autopilot” is the same word in both English and German.
I’m just pointing out that Google Translate isn’t a very strong cite (not to deliver any kind of messageboard “smack down”, just wanted to point out that unrecognized words go untranslated- in case you didn’t know).

It actually surprises me a bit (not enough to argue the point, of course) that pilot means the same thing in English that it means auf Deutsch. There aren’t many words of Greek origin in common use in German.

The only other one which immediately springs to mind, in fact, is Auto.

Well, my only cite that “pilot” might be a cognate was the very translation websites that I myself said could not be counted as strong cites.

I just now went to the German version of Wikipedia.

Here’s the German Wiki page for “Pilot”.

Here’s the German Wiki page for “Autopilot”.

That settles it for me. “Autopilot” is the same in German and English.

Another way to test it using just the translation websites would be to translate it via some third language. For instance, translating “autopilot” from German to French gives “pilote automatique”.

This thread is not a zombie, it’s just been frozen in ice for four months.

Yup. The date card for Cap’s first mission is “Italy 1943.” And he crashes into the ice just before VE Day (May 8, 1945), so there’s two years there to play with in Cap 2.

In the comics, Bucky is frozen in an icy river after a drop out of a plane. He is eventually recovered by the Russians and brainwashed into being an assassin. Movie Bucky falls to his “death” over an icy river and its possible the torture chamber sequence was round one of the brainwashing.
