Captain Pike? (Star Trek)

IIRC, James Blish mentions it in [Spock Must Die!, the second Star Trek novel (the first if you don’t count “kid’s books” – even those written by Mack Reynolds). He mentions it in his novelizations, too, I think.

Peter David has hardly “drifted away” from the Trek universe! He writes the “New Frontier” series and the most recent installment has just been published. What’s unique about his series is that nearly every regular character is his own creation, the lone exception being Lt. Commander Shelby, from the two-part TNG episode “The Best of Both Worlds.” (The one where Picard becomes a Borg.) David has also written at least one “New Frontier” comic book. (I read it.)

This from the official startrek.com website:

Screw you, Paramount. You don’t get to have it both ways. Bastards.

ok, back to the original topic, Capt. Pike.

what the fuck? starfleet can make ships to jam around the universe with “anti-matter” but the best they can do for this poor slob is a communication system that consists entirely of a blinking light that CAN ONLY SIGNAL YES OR NO!!??

totally and inexcusably lame!

BEEP

Fair enough. How 'bout “…led him to drift away from the Star Trek universe for a while, and pen a few funny/bitter Star Trek columns for CBG before eventually drifting back.”

Fenris

Admittedly, poetic license writ large.
BUT, writ by Gene Roddenberry, first season, when computers filled a room.

And a damn good episode in terms of plot and character development.

Yeah, in 1967 you couldn’t have had Pike using a Stephen Hawking-style voice synthesizer…nobody would’ve bought it.
