It also caused damage to nearby buildings, including a Denny’s across the street, but the cold-storage room at the clinic is intact. No other explosives were found in the area.
I personally think the location was a coincidence, but we’ll have to wait until they find out who did this, and why, and why they chose that location to set the bomb off.
Your link quoted someone from ARC saying they would be fully operational Monday. I’m wondering how that can be after I looked at the picture in the article. And it’s a downright miracle the “reproductive material” (as they called it) was unaffected.
Given the severe damage apparently centered on the clinic, it’s a leap for me to call it coincidence that the bomber just happened to be there in the parking lot.
We’ll have to see what the investigation turns up - but there’s some craziness surrounding IVF, including referring to embryos as “extrauterine children”.
That looks a lot like a car drove through the building at speed starting from the street side, detonated while inside the building, then the car wreckage was carried by its momentum out into the rear parking lot.
However exactly it played out, the perp did a very thorough number on the building.
Wackos targeting abortion clinics are common enough. Who gets angry at a fertility clinic? Some wannabe parent who paid a lot of money and still had a failure? Or a religious wacko who thinks fertility treatments are “playing god?” Or was this just ordinary workplace violence or somebody attacking an ex- and it’s just coincidence the target was a place with some (small) political / cultural profile?
Among pro-life activists, there is a belief of many that fertility clinics are doing de facto abortion on a mass scale. A significant number of embryos are destroyed in the process of IVF. So they see it as a de facto, if unintentional, abortion clinic.
My initial theory - that it wasn’t targeted - appears to be wrong. The decedent has apparently been identified, and a manifesto located. If this is true, the whole thing is a doozy. Details to follow upon confirmation.
Years ago, we had a bomb attack at a St. Paul Public Library. About all it did was damage a garbage dumpster, etc. in the loading dock. But nobody understood Why? Who was mad at the library?
Until they realized that the address was 1 number different from the Planned Parenthood Clinic located in a similar building across the street.
Presumably the Pro-Lifers hired in out-of-town bombers, who got the address wrong when planting a bomb in the middle of the night.
I haven’t seen the manifesto (I’m not sure it’s been released), but one report I did see includes “being born without his consent” among his complaints.
ISTR that she was banned, because she was sending bizarre PMs to some members. I was spared, but if this is who I’m thinking of, that’s why she went bye-bye.
