Car buying can be difficult, if you're a woman...

I’m taking a Driver’s Ed class over the summer. We’ve finished the “book work” and are now driving in small groups with the instructor. Apparently, my instructor has a taste for country music.

“Lucky me,” I think as I climb into the vehicle.

After a few minutes he reaches for the radio knob. I’m hoping against hope that he will turn the infernal device off, but alas, my dreams are cruelly shattered by one tap of the ‘scan’ button. It pulls in another country station, 96.9, KKOW, “The Kow.”

“Whoopee,” thinks YthDecay. “Can I jump out of the vehicle? Should I tuck and roll?”

About this time I hear a car commercial issuing forth. This isn’t verbatim, but you get the gist of it…

“Here at Somethingoranother Ford and Lincoln, we know that buying a car can be tough…if you’re a woman. It’s a stressful experience, and our salespeople will never push you into buying a car that isn’t right for you or your budget…”

It goes on for a bit in this vein, generally implying that women are fragile, delicate creatures who can’t handle the big bad decisions involved when buying a car. I was reminded of one of the “I Love Lucy” episodes where she buys a new hat in the super-duper Department Store.

Honestly, I was taken aback by this commercial. I know this area of the United States isn’t exactly a bastion of progressiveness, but do we still see women as helpless and weak?

Anyways, I wanted to hear what the Dopers think of this sort of advertising, and provide a place for patrons of the SDMB to share other ‘insulting advertising’ experiences.
