Car Dopers: How much for a new clutch?

I’m guessing my clutch is about to go. It has 190K on it, so it has treated me right. But it disengages very close to the floor now and I’m thinking it won’t be too long before it goes.

It is a 97 Acura integra, 5 speed.

How much can I expect this to cost? I’m thinking that the car isn’t worth a whole lot anymore and so I am going to have to decide if I want to start doing these kinds of repairs or start looking for another car.

Just as a frame of reference both my roommate and I go to the same mechanic and he recently replaced his clutch (manual, 5 speed in a '99 accord) for $600 total including parts and labor. I drive a '95 Mazda 626 (5 speed manual) and was quoted the same price if I were to get my clutch replaced. This is in the DC area.

Which model exactly? LS Coupe? GS-R Sedan? etc.?

It is an LS coupe.

DC area here too. I had the clutch pad replaced on my 2001 Subaru about 4 years ago. The dealer quoted me a price of $1500 - my local mechanic charged me a little over $600.

This os one of those thigns that is goig to very significantly with the vehicle, depending on how hard the clutch is to get to, etc. It’s best to wait for someone who knows the vehicle you’re asking about to chime in.

I don’t…so, that’s all I have to say about that.

For your car, I’d expect replacement of the clutch disc, pressure plate, and release bearing to be in the 750-800 neighborhood. That’s using top-quality parts, which I highly recommend - I’ve seen too many rebuilt and budget-priced clutches give problems. If the flywheel requires machining, that may add another 75 or so.

I may be wrong here, but wouldn’t that be the opposite of a sign the clutch is going? If it disengaged immediately on pushing the pedal, and conversely engaged only after the pedal was nearly to the top of its travel, I think that would be the indication of the clutch going.

I’ve never had a clutch go out on a car, but have had to replace them on motorcycles, and the sign that the clutch is going is that it disengages immediately when pressure is put on the clutch lever (pedal all the way up).

I had the same problem with a Ford Ranger with 200,000 miles on the original clutch.

The hydraulic fliud for the clutch was low, I topped it off and the clutch pedal returned to normal and it worked fine. Of course, with 200,000 the clutch disc will eventually go but for now it’s good.

It’s probably worth it for the OP to check the fluid level.

I replaced a clutch, slave cylinder, throwout rod and had the flywheel resurfaced last year on my '03 S10 5 speed for a little over $800. I’ve never had one replaced on any other vehicle, though, so YMMV.
