Right, like the spanking Glavine remark was directed at you.
Ease up, mouthbreather, the Braves had a whole decade to be good, and I don’t see that ending any time soon with their pitching staff and lineup. The Cards haven’t been to the World Series since '87 and sweeping the Braves is a little exciting considering what they did to the Cards in '96. (For those who don’t know, the Cards were leading the Braves 3 games to 1 in the NLCS and the Braves came back to take it. I think they outscored the Cards 30-1 or something outrageous like that for the last three games of the series. Embarrassing.)
If you don’t like me being happy about this, stop reading the thread and take your sour grapes somewhere else.
Right now I’m excited. Next year I’ll take a reality check and realize Kile is the ace, Ankiel is good (but inexperienced), Stephenson may have been a fluke, and Hentgen and Benes are at best good players capable of winning 11 or 12 games. I realize our pitching staff is nothing along the lines of Maddux, Glavine, and Smoltz. Of course, not all cities can have someone like Ted Turner own the team and buy all the players he wants for the championship.
As for the lineup - any player is replaceable. Will Clark proved that this year. But before you dismiss the Cards as the new dynasty (admittedly, this is all wishful thinking at this point, they’ve done nothing to prove their going to be consistantly good) here’s the talent on the team:
Big Mac (nuff said), Fernando Vina (IMO one of the best leadoff men in the business and excells at turning the double play), Edgar Renteria (All-Star quality), Fernando Tatis (injured himself this year, but had a 30/30 season last year, definitely an up-and-comer), Mike Matheny (not much at the plate, but the best defensive catcher we’ve had in a while), JD Drew (injured himself his rookie year, didn’t see as much playing time this year since LaRussa wants him too get some more experience before becoming the regular starter, getting better every day - not the next Mickey Mantle he is replaceable, but he’s still good), Jim Edmonds (career year this year batting ahead of Mac and Clark, has the edge over Mike Matheny for team MVP due to his offensive stats), and Ray Lankford (why don’t we trade this guy already?) So basically, Lankford and Drew wouldn’t be missed but the other players would be. 6 out of 8 ain’t bad.
