Career change after 40-How hard is It?

For those of you who have decided to change careers-can you actually do it after age 40? I’m thinking of it, but it scares me…you have to start at the bottom again, and you don’t have all that much time left. Still, a lot of people have done it-let me know your story!

Oy. Tell me about it. I’m 45 and my career in magazine publishing (about 20 years) will be over when this job ends, as I took a huge step backwards by taking a copy-editing job, and I’m too old to reclimb the ladder.

I’m flummoxed. The help-wanted ads provide no solace. I’m actually thinking of looking for receptionist jobs–you just do your work and go home and don’t have to give a damn–in fact, you’re looked at askance if you do give a damn.

Hey, career change before 30 ain’t just a total picnic. :frowning:

I know exactly what you mean. I have a temp job right now that essentially boils down to this. While I wouldn’t call it “fun” or stress free, I have more time and energy to devote to my life outside work than I’ve ever had before.
