I thought about writing this using vague terms and phrases so anybody who is considering a new career could glean something from this thread. But, let’s be honest, I’m not interested in everybody elses career change, I’m interested in mine ! So, let’s cut to the chase… I have a degree in Computer Science and I work in Dallas as a computer programmer. I have been writing code for nearly 7 years and, to be perfectly frank, I am bored to death! I honestly don’t know if it’s the programming or the tedious world of business that bores me, but I do know I have to get out soon… About a year ago I got a pilots license and have become increasingly fascinated with the aviation industry. So, I want to crossover. I have decided I don’t want to be a career pilot. Instead, I would rather sidestep my career, perhaps with a job that involves some programming but would also allow me to get my hands “dirty” actually playing with airplanes and their components. Is there a way I could take my degree and get into aviation without a lot of extra schooling? I’m not opposed to school at all and am considering an aerospace engineering masters, but I really don’t want to quit working for a few years. I have been hearing ads for part time MBA programs in the area that meet at nights for professionals who can’t afford to go to school during the day. Do they offer similar programs for degrees in aviation? Any advice is greatly appreciated! Thanks…
While in college, I used to work for an airplane parts broker. We bought a pretty standard program that kept track of our inventory but it lacked many other features that would be good to run a business.
Maybe you could work for a software firm or develop an application that took care of inventory management, invoicing, etc.
