Cartoon Network’s Adult Swim

Why? Just why? Why did you need to put on an hour of King of the Hill in your lineup?

You have been great about putting on experimental programming that no else would ever try and sometimes it fails miserably but sometimes it spawns classics that I will remember for a long time: Space Ghost: Coast to Coast, Sealab 2021, Brak, Robot Chicken, Venture Bros., Birdman: Attorney at Law and Boondocks to name a few.

You put on a lot of anime as well, which I don’t normally watch but if I am up late at least there’s something to watch. You put in some filler shows like Family Guy and Oblongs, while I’ve seen most of them, sometimes I catch one I’ve missed before and they are worth a second sleepy viewing. You added American Dad and Mission Hill but I put up with it because they are funny sometimes.

I even have a reason these days to stay up on Tue. Wed. and Thur. because I’m dating a girl that works at a restaurant and doesn’t get home till 12:30 or 1:00 and on Fri and Sat. she doesn’t get home till 2:00 in the morning. Discover and History channel start repeating the primetime lineup at 1:00 but it’s usually stuff I’ve seen before and I could flip over to Adult Swim and be amused for a while.

Now you cum gurgling twits have put on a full fucking hour of the worst show to ever appear for a third season, never mind thirteen seasons, on the Fox network. I don’t know if Mike Judge is trying to fill in the karmic void left by Beavis and Butthead or Office Space but it is by far the worst tripe I have ever had the displeasure of trying to watch.

King of the Hill has its audience but it is not the one that will bring in advertiser dollars on Adult Swim. I hope everyone of you over at Williams St. involved in this decision are fired and the Aqua Team: Hunger Force team shove pineapples up your ass and post pictures all over the internet. You guys had better pray that ABC gobbles up the rights to the show before you piss off too many people with that retched shit.

I like King of the Hill and Adult Swim, so I guess this is good news for me. I don’t know why some people assume King of the Hill has a separate (Republican) audience from other animated shows when it’s on the same night as the Simpsons and Family Guy. Adult Swim wants another popular network show to lead in for their original stuff like they’ve been doing with Family Guy and Futurama for a few years now.

I think this is the dumbest rant I have ever seen in the Pit–and that’s really saying something because in the past 9 years, there have been some real idiocy going on around here. Many of your assertions are either completely braindead or flat out wrong.

King of the Hill is a great show. They added it to their line-up because it’s an animated series and they probably need to fill the void that Futurama left. I also disagree with your basic premise that they’ve always played experimental and edgy shows. I started watching around 2001-2002, and that’s when they were playing Home Movies and Baby Blues. They’ve been playing Mission Hill for that long as well–it wasn’t a recent addition, they just cycle the 13 episodes in and out of the lineup. So bitching and moaning because they used to be cool, but now they suck is pretty stupid, since this is basically always been their approach to programming.

Also, the “filler shows” you mention? They’re Adult Swim’s backbone–their bread and butter. Family Guy has been the consistently highest rated program for the network since they began airing (AS is its own network now). If they didn’t have the advertising dollars that Family Guy and American Dad bring in (and Futurama brought in), then they wouldn’t be able to air the really out there experimental shit that they do. And there are lots of different people who watch AS and need their tastes catered to. That’s why the really crazy stuff is aired on the weekends (generally) and later than shows like KoTH, FG, etc.

Adult Swim added King of the Hill? Sounds like the best thing they’ve done in years. I was a big fan of the early stuff, but I recently tried watching some of the shit they put up now and my eyeballs almost evaporated. High school kids are making better Youtube videos than that these days (and that’s not intended as a compliment to Youtube videos made by high school kids.)

Hold on a second, you like American Dad?

I love KotH, but that news does surprise me. It is quite “conservative” compared to most Adult Swim fare.

I don’t like King of the Hill, but the shows you mentioned as “experimental programming” are unwatchably bad.

King of the Hill is one of the worst TV shows ever. It’s not funny. It’s tragic.

I’m generally not a fan of this retort, but it sounds like you just don’t get it. And it’s not meant to be a knee-slapping 100% comedy. I guess the bit of nuance it has is way too much for most people, because everyone always critiques it by saying “it’s not funny.”

Come on, Cisco! Everyone knows that if a show is animated it’s supposed to be funny, right?

I do think King of the Hill is one of the worst shows around (mainly because of how dumb and simple the humor always is), but I thought/hoped you were pitting the extent to which Adult Swim has disappeared up its own ass. They used to be edgy and weird but total genius, then they got more and more “experimental” while still being downright hilarious, but the last time I turned it on all of the shows had names like “Boner Squad” and just had recycled characters from other shows literally spouting inside-joke cheap-absurdism gibberish.

King of the Hill is one of the best animated shows ever created, second only to The Simpsons. I’m going to have to get on board with the idea that some people just don’t get it. You don’t actually have to like the show’s main characters to like the show. Hank and Peggy are supposed to suck. It’s part of their charm, and I think that’s what many people just don’t get.

When I was in high school, my dad loved to slap his face and sigh, “that boy ain’t right…”

Yup.

Seriously, though, while I love King of the Hill, I can get behind Alienhand’s rant. KOTH has been in daily reruns on both FX and my local FOX station for several years now. I’ve seen all the episodes and am so bored by it, I only watch the new season’s episodes. The last thing we need is another outlet for a show which already runs at least six times a day (and often more) in some markets.

+1

I get the jokes they’re making. I just don’t think they’re funny. They’re just above the level of joke I expect a 3rd grader to make, and they make me laugh just about as much. Maybe you’re right. Maybe my sense of humor to overly or underdeveloped for the target audience. I find lots of things funny. But not KotH.

I used to think KotH was incredibly boring, till I actually sat down and watched an episode. Then I got pretty addicted. I haven’t seen it in a while but I still own a few DVDs, and when I do catch an ep, it’s fun.

“Stupid redneck hillbilly!”

I don’t understand what you mean when you mention 3rd grade jokes. Most of the humor is literally situational–for example, my favorite arc is when Peggy breaks her legs and she needs to go through physical therapy, but it’s really hard. So Cotton helps her, and her motivation for learning to walk again is literally so she can dance on his grave. I can’t stand Hank’s wife, but I truly do sympathize with her hatred for Cotton. But even Cotton isn’t an entirely black and white character. He loves Bobby and G.H., and the episode where Hank learns that Cotton can’t afford to support his new family shows Cotton in a genuinely sympathetic light–that’s also the episode where Hank’s Wife is “forced” to turn the veteran’s day float into the “futility of war.” I don’t think a 3rd grader would think of either of those episodes.

True, the rant is bad. One assertion is that I don’t like KotH but I and many others have liked some shows that they tried but not others. The other is that KotH brings a different audience that are not going watch the other shows(Okay, I might be wrong). It’s a sit-com that doesn’t use being animated for anything, but gets on my nerves and I’m not alone.

Space Ghost(since the mid nineties), Brak and Sealab 2021 were all on at the time and I said experimental, as in, experimenting. I never said that Adult Swim has gotten better or worse but now two of the eight hours contains a show that I can’t stand.

Filler shows, yes, content they didn’t create to make money and promote the other stuff. AS network is now separate from the Cartoon Network, but in the US they still share channel time under the Turner umbrella. Yes, ABC is talking with Mike Judge to created a new show and use KotH for a one hour animation block and AS (and others) won’t be able to use it.

No. Amused from time to time, yes.

I’m not a huge KotH fan, but I didn’t think it was particularly conservative. I thought that the irony of the show was that Hank Hill was very conservative, but had to deal with all this “liberal” stuff like his son being sort of artsy and unathletic, the upper middle class Asian family moving in next door and whatnot.

Anyhow, I only really like Adult Swim or some of the anime like Cowboy Bebop or Ghost in the Shell. A lot of it is kind of weird to me.
