Cartooniverse: when I'm bashing somebody, you'll know it, OK?

Pepperlandgirl, I’m forced by the need to be consistent and practice integrity in the standards of how I act out my own faith to disagree with something you said here, and I hope you won’t take it personally.

Some moons ago, you and I and Monty and a few others were dealing with a rather conservative Christian who insisted that members of the CoJCoLDS were “not Christian.” I disagreed vehemently – although you LDS folks have a number of beliefs with which I disagree and found your theology on a book I consider suspect, you are, in the last analysis, people who have accepted the Christian God through Jesus Christ in the same manner as every other person claiming the name and title of Christian has. By my mind, that makes you Christians.

Most of you belong to the denominational church headed by Gordon Hinckley and having its headquarters in Salt Lake City. A smaller group (are there any on this board) belong to the Reorganized Church with headquarters in Independence MO (IIRC). And a bunch of people belong to various splinter sects, including the ones whom RT castigated for their, uh, strange manner of taking underaged wives unto themselves, to avoid language I’ll regret later.

Sorry, but what’s sauce for the goose is also sauce for the dodo bird. If you are Christians because you fulfill the definition of what a Christian is supposed to do and self-identify as Christians, then these folks, who claim adherence to the Joseph Smith Jr. teachings and self-identify as Mormons, are entitled to be called Mormons. I suspect it makes you as angry to see them vilifying your good name as it does me to see Phelps’ or Falwell’s latest efforts to spread hate in Christ’s name and see them called “Christian preachers.” However, what’s fair is fair: they constitute the lunatic fringe of your faith, as those guys do of mine.

Fair enough?

Not really, Poly. After all, AFAIK, they don’t self-identify as “Mormons.” Pretty much every one of those groups I’ve encountered has made a big deal about not being Mormon.

BTW, the Reorganites now call themselves Community of Christ.

All and all I do think RTF could have left the word Morman out and just said polygamist and made his little joke with out offending anyone and still have been correct in that some polygamists self-identify as Morman and some do not.
And besides the Morman = Polygamist jokes are really old/stale/not funny and I’m sure RTF could do better.

Ack!!!

Mormon! It’s Mormon!

JFTR, it wasn’t a “Mormon=Polygamist” joke. It was a “FCM, you could give up your daughter for adoption to these folks” joke.

And every news piece I’ve ever read on them has identified them as Mormon. I used the term to make sure the correct ID was made in readers’ minds from the beginning, to save having to explain the damned joke later. So sue me. Or blow me. I don’t care at this point.

Ummmm. . . . noooooooooooooo.

As others have already said, it is MORMON.

Well, I’m not going to sue or blow you, RTF. But what the newsies identify folks as and what the folks identify as ain’t always the same.

And to make a joke work, you’ve got to structure it in a way so that people aren’t confused as to what you’re talking about.

A Polish Catholic Church of America priest, a Reform Messianic Jewish rabbi, and a Church of God (Podunk, TN) minister walk into a bar…

“I think the Mormon prophet
Was a very funny man;
I wonder how his wives enjoyed
Their prophet-sharing plan…”

Ba-dum-bump-CRASH.

crickets

Ethel Morman?

In a pleasantly understated manner, jayjay just hit the nail on the head.

OK then, let’s redo it:

FCM, one of those polygamists would probly be happy to adopt her. Then add her to his passel of wives after a few months, but what were you expecting? ;)”

Whaddaya think?

Sorry, Monty; from the OP and other comments, I understood them as self-identifying as Mormon.
