THE GODFATHER is one of the most nearly perfect movies ever, but suppose that for some reason you were assigned to do a remake today. Money and availability are no object, but it has to be actors who are alive and working today. Who would you cast?
I’ll start with:
Don Corleone: Daniel Day Lewis
Sonny: Christian Bale
Tom: Leonardo DiCaprio
Michael: Joseph Gordon Levitt
Feel free to completely rewrite the above or give multiple options.
Don Corleone: Gary Oldman with just a bit of age makeup, blah, blah, blah
Mama Corelone: Talia Shire
Sonny: Edward Norton
Tom: Matt Damon
Michael: Ally Walker, change to Michaela
Fredo: Walter Goggins
Connie: Amy Adams
Carlo Rizzo: Mark Ruffulo
Kay: Jennifer Lawrence
Sal Tessio: Abe Vigoda or barring that, Jeremy Renner
Pete Clemenza, change to Frankie Five Angels: Robert Downey Jr.
Hmmm interesting. I’m sure I’ll get it wrong in my own head and regret putting anything down later.
Don Corleone: Going out on a limb: Alan Alda. He’s Italian and some of his recent work shows he can play a menacing son of a bitch very well. As well as being affable. So an affable, intelligent menacing son of a bitch when he needs to be. Perfect.
Fredo: Michael Imperioli
Michael: I can’t do better than Joseph Gordon Levitt. Good call.
Sonny: Scott Caan. Why not?
Tom: Matt Damon
Tessio: Chazz Palminteri
Clemenza: Vincent Pastore
Kay: Amy Adams
Luca: Steve Schrippa
Johnny Fontaine: Justin Timberlake
Jack Woltz: Jason Alexander
Moe Green: Eliot Gould (but that would basically be his Ocean’s 11 role)
Vito- Alfred Molina
Michael- James McAvoy
Sonny- Clive Owen
Fredo- Michael Imperioli
Luca- Robbie Coltrane
Kay- Amy Adams
Mo Green- Richard Jenkins
Tom Hagen- Cillian Murphy
Clemenza- Joe Gannascoli (Vito from the Sopranos)
Tessio- Stanley Tucci
Connie- Vanessa Hudgens
Carlo Rizzo- Bobby Canavale
Johnny Fontaine- Jeremy Renner
Jack Woltz- Kevin Spacey
I surprised myself by how many Brits I would cast.
