I am not prepared to say. I watched it on DVD and didn’t really like it. I didn’t hate it, it was just kinda “meh.” I’ll watch it again when it comes to cable. I think Mol did an OK job of page, though I didn’t see the transcendent acting job that some critics saw. She was good, but she didn’t own the role the way Ron Perlman owns Hellboy.
And I also agree that Keanu Reaves did a find job as Constantine, even though the movie character wasn’t really the same person as the one from the comics. (I don’t know, haven’t read the comics, but I thought Reaves did a fine job of portraying a kinda depressed, pissed-off guy who really hates demons.)
Anyone ever read Wildcats? One of my favorite comic series of all time, especially when Joe Casey wrote it. I think Brad Pitt would be a natural to play Grifter, a badass white-trash mercenary gunslinger, but if they couldn’t get him, Christian Kane (Lindsey McDonald from Angel) would make it work as well. Rose McGowan would make a great Voodoo, Jay Mohr could be Agent Wax, Taye Diggs as Edwin Dolby, Julianne Moore as C.C. Rendozzo, and Brian Thompson as Agent Orange. Never thought of a good actor to play Jack Marlowe, aka Spartan, the multibillionaire visionary CEO of the HALO Corporation, who is really an android. Maybe Marc Blucas (Riley from Buffy) or a younger Eric Stoltz?
Olyphant’s a great choice for Jesse Custer, though. And I think Eastwood is the defining choice for the Saint, though Henricksen would work if Clint wouldn’t do it.
My favorite name actress for Wonder Woman: Rosario Dawson.
Monica Bellucci for me, but I believe she was already nixed by WB for being “too old.” I wouldn’t say no to Morena Baccarin or Charisma Carpenter, either, although I suspect the latter would also be deemed “too old” by studio heads. At least I have the utmost faith in Joss Whedon to make a good final casting decision.
Yeah, totally. Except for the padding. I know comic book chicks are typically drawn busty, but unless it’s crucial to the character, I don’t really see the need, personally.
I have to say, I like a lot of the suggestions so far in this thread. Except one, that always seems to pop up in these discussions: Johnny Depp as Doctor Strange.
I’m not even a fan of Strange, but unless you really, really changed the style of the character and series, comparisons to the 9th Gate just don’t apply, IMO. Now, Timothy Dalton (The Living Daylights, the Rocketeer, Hawks) seems like a great choice, if you ask me. I would like to see a movie version focus on the more staid, gothic-horror elements of the character, but I just don’t think 9th Gate is the way to go. More like Hellboy, but with a Nero Wolfe/Sherlock Holmes style lead figure.
I hear ya on Gershon as Catwoman. Though I’ll suggest Paul Bettany as Constantine.
Damn…good call on Damian Lewis, though I honestly thought Ben Affleck didn’t do that bad of a job.
Brandon Lee, IMHO, could have made an (almost) movie-salvaging Robin/Nightwing for the last two Batman movies before Batman Returns. Except for him being—y’know. But hey, another ten years, and that might not be a problem anymore.
…and I see Love Rhombus beat me to him.
Brandon Routh as Superman, I didn’t really quite “get”…until I saw him onscreen. Or, rather, heard him, after he opened his mouth. Wow.
Michael Massee was pretty amazing as Banner/Hulk in the animated Ultimate Avengers, I thought.
Speaking of voices, that’s been a sticking point with me in regards to Christian Bale’s Batman. I guess I’ve been spoiled by Kevin Conroy, or even the hoarse whisper of Keaton. Bale just…doesn’t quite cut it, vocally, as the Bat.
If only he could get away from his huge ego, I see Steven Segal as Groo the Wanderer. He now has the look (not the nose, the pouch), the strength, and even his pigheadedness!
I don’t think anyone is saying they should copy the movie, unless they’re arguing that the Dr. Strange movie should really suck. They’re just using Depp in that role to point out how much he looks like Dr. Strange.
Yeah, even though I’m probably the guy that continually mentions the Ninth Gate Depp thing, you did glean that I was imagining a less-faithful adaptation of 'Dr. Strange." But as the other poster mentioned, I’m commenting on Depp’s facility for realizing “atypical” characters more than lifting the tone of the movie he starred in. But I totally get your point, too.
I agree with the Dopers who would love to see her in the role. Perfection. However… if the producers are looking to make this a franchise (and they should be fired if they aren’t); and considering that a trilogy takes about 5-6 tears to complete; Bellucci would be almost 50 by the time the last movie wraps. As good as ALL those pictures look, if I was producing the film, I would be hesitant as well.
Heh. After I posted the comment about bustocity and character, my mind went there too.
