Cat Care and Financial Help Needed (Thread approved.)

This is my second submission for help from generous people. This time it is for myself and my cat, rather than an established charity.

There is no need to report this as a bad thread. ***Full permission, with protocol advice, has been granted for this thread after some admin/mod consultation. ***

I am very uncertain about the health of my cat, Calypso. I took her to a local veterinarian yesterday, could only afford the most basic tests, and am waiting for a complete message back from the animal doctor this afternoon.

Calyso is eleven, until recently rather kittenish yet, and still a few years short of the average cat life-expectancy. A few datys ago she stopped eating, which did not shock me at first because it has been typical for her to take a break for a day from her food. Then I spotted that she was no longer drinking her water.

I simply can’t afford the high-end estimate I received from the people at the vet. I am also at a loss to pay this month’s rent, and the new management is stricter than the previous one about deadlines, even when previous months have been paid. Even though I have already contacted them about needing a bit more time to get the money together, before the bad news about my cat, I am certain to get the ever-friendly  eviction threat, as once before, and they use the most threatening of language. Probably to establish to some dragging their feet unnecessarily, that rent payment is mandatory, and expected on time every month. But receiving one is still very unsettling, to the point of being distraut.

I am worried about Calypso on a daily, even hourly basis. I am cancelling a day trip to Batavia, for important board-realted business, to saty with her as much as possible. She has shown only the tiniest improvedment since the tests and preliminary treatment at the clinic. They injected water intravenously, and I took her home. (She was extremely hostile, though not rabid, when being exmined, and the whole time at the clinic, only really calming down when my friend pulled the car back into the apartyment driveway. This was not a surprise to me, since she had refused to eat with an overnight stay after being fixed.)

Since coming home, she has not had more than a few sips of her large water bowl. She has not really “touched” her moist or dry food (two kinds). Her skin no longer shows loss of elasticity, so the injected water has helped. But of course she has continued to lose weight.

I am constantly second-guessing myself, wondeing if I should have left her at the clinic overnight, despite her emotionality, while I scrambled around to get more funds together. The office is actually a continuation of the business by a previous name, which allowed late paymnt. I owe them no money from those days (in the
'90’s) when I had two other cats. But they simply do not bill anymore, or accept late payemnts by the end of 30 days. Everything is payment upon reciving services.

To pay for the remaining treatemnet, plus this month’s rent, I need about another $700.

To make matters worse, a program I subscribed to has ended, leaving me with no bus pass after Thursday. With only Blue Choice option, Monroe plan, I cannot get a much-needed bus pass to attend board meetings, quite further than walking distance, and other, related meetings, such as at the local MHA, or the local Coordinated Care Services.

Without a $56 bus pass for the month, my ability to continue as a board officer will be impaired. We hope to open an entirely peer-run program to supplant a closing social club for peers early next year.

When it rains, it pours department: **

The parent program has recently announced that it is closing on the 21st, 8 days from now, rather tahn at the end of the year, or at the beginning of 2010. The only good news is that the rehab building iwill still be open, and we have been promised a meeting space there indefinitely, by the hospital auspices.

Please, if you can help, let me know. If you are in “dire straits” yourself you may be willing to offer advice, problem-solving, or references for services for help, instead of dollars.

Full identifying info, including street address will be available by PM to those who want to make a contribution or need my address to make a connection with an agency they will connect me to. (I received confirmation that it would be unwise to simply distribute persoanl info to “everyone”.)

Sorry about all the typos and bad spellings.

I should have made clear that this is really about brainstorming and probelem-solving only, including referalls to organizations that help financially. Part of the advisement I received was that only the most extreme situations can merit the board having “fund-raising” (and on a one-time basis).

Sorry.

What can folks provide on an informational basis?

I’m afraid I can’t be much help financially, having helped out a couple of other dopers recently, new transmission for the car, built a new enclosed porch for my house, and a sick dog require meds totalling $150/month right now. But I will suggest you shop around for vets. Certainly some vets work payment plans. Also, vets can arrange care-credit, a commercial credit program from medical expenses. There is interest charged on that, however.

I don’t know exactly what the board meetings and things you attend are, but that might be something you have to put aside for the time being. I’m sure that your rent payment is mandatory and expected on time, but most rental management companies deal with people who pay late all the time. That’s why they have a policy in place to charge a penalty. I know you don’t want to pay a penalty, but if it’s a matter of waiting a few days for a check to come in, they’ll deal with it. It costs them time and money for an eviction - they won’t send you packing when youj’re a day late.

Good luck to you. I wish I could help more than just good wishes.

If you’re near a DVM school, said school may have a pet version of a free clinic.

Veterinary Medicine school?

Thanks for the tip.

ETA:: Okay, the degree is DMV, as in Doctor of…

Thank you.

And some DVMs run free/low cost clinics.

I’ve posted a bit on them before, but of course most people here would not have come across the threads.

Technically, only First Tuesday meetings are currently board meetings. Other Tuesday/Thursday afternoon meetings have been termed "work meetings"with the exeption of special meetings, such as a presentation from one of our many consultants.

As far as tabling my participation for a time, I did call in non-attendance for today, a work meeting. Thursday is an unusual situation, with an arranged day-trip to Batavia for a conference participation, with attending the final party of ther parent program as the other option. My original thought, with business-before-pleasure reasoning, was that the Batavia trip came first. That was early last week. Now I can’t see leaving town with my cat sick, and I can manage to attend just a bit of the party before going home again.

I don’t feel that I can really take an extended leave, under the circumstances. We were promised money from Albany (capital of NYS) as soon as we completed connection with an umbrella agency. So it’s been crunch time since our general meeting with Albany representatives Sep. 24. Now, I am treasurer. (Yes, I’ve noted the irony of a broke traesurer. I was just saying that, in fact, to a former staff member of the parent program on a phone call.) When we were a steering committee, I was committee chair. For the first 20 weeks (from the first week of March), I had perfect attendance. I’ve only missed three meetings in the past 12 weeks or so after that.

{WARNING, more “bragging” is inserted among that which follows:}

There is so much to be done before the end of the year. I am in contact with a private funder that has both a local church request submission (Just met the deadline at the end of last month! ) and a national submission process with the national church body. I am handling these personally, as chair of the Grants Committee.

The goal of our board is to establish an organization to supplant a Rochester Psychiatric Center program that is categorized as a “Psycho-Social Club.” To its credit, the staff has always encouraged peers (yep, that’s folks who have problems :)) to run units such as classes, workshops and groups.

What we will do, partly out of necessity (Albany has decided that p-s clubs, social clubs, and clubhouses are taboo words in their new paradigm) but also from a consesnsus of persoanl opinion among us.

We will not just have peers run some or all of the units, they will be the organization, both for board and staff. Any entering attendee, with enough skills and motivation, can eventually be on the staff or board.

It’s very exciting work, and challenging. For the meeting with Albany represenatives, I was able to list dozens of progress steps in the previous 8 months. (With the default of our elected board member/ chief spokesperson I filled that role, unofficially.) We were congratulated by Albany stafffor having accomplished more in months, than other start-up non-profits of our type have accomplished in years. Beyond that, our most prominent consulatnt told the Albany staff and us that she had never met a group in all her years of working to help start up groups that were so open-minded and willing to learn new, precise terminology.

The work is so important that I feel especially stressed with what is going on.

Please excuse all the back-slapping, which is frankly for myself as well as for our team. It’s helping me get through the day.

IMPORTANT NOTE: Board needs are completely separate from my personal needs.

From our consultatnt-aided budget, we will be able to operate the first year with state money alone. Extra funding may help with ancillaries such as attendee transportation.

(And, just in case anyone is wondering, a treasurer for a non-profit only handles figures, which in any event will be overseen by our umbrella organization, and not money. So, even if I could become corrupt, there would be absolutely no temptation, regardless of any future personal situation.)

DVM: Doctor of Veterinary Medicine

Right. Cerberus (and wikipedia.org) to the info rescue!

Calypso may be doing better, starting with subcutaneous water Monday morning. I finally received word from the doc yesterday evening, after trying to reach her all day, and she gave a tentative diagnosis.

Starting this morning, calypso is on one of two appetite boosters, plus an antibiotic in case it’s pancreitus. (spelling?)

Although, if the problem is a bit of string in her intestines, surgery may be necessary. :frowning:

I’m trying to be optimistic.

Have you heard about Care Credit - I’m not sure your entire financial situation, but they offer financing for veterinary procedures. There are also Life Line Grants as well as some other emergency help provided by various charities. Google things like grant, credit, veterinary, low-income . . . you get the gist.

Best of luck - I wish I had more to give.

I hope you can save your cat, and keep your residence. I can’t help you other than bringing the thread to the top. I wouldn’t hijack your thread so much about your job’s financial problems. It distracts from the topic of the thread. Direct people to the cause at hand.

You need to link to kitty photos.

Agreed. I just felt so much a need to share, and it was self-indulgent to go on so much about it. (The board doesn’t have financial problems, just a bit of a waiting game. That’s a nitpick, but I’m leery that people will think I’m asking for $ for the board. I intend to move to a salaried position after the center opens, whereas no not-for-profit board position allows for any compensation, not even a stipend.)

I will put any future developments into a new thread.

As for Calypso photos, I will ask for assistance from a friend who is experienced in downloading scanned images. I had the briefest experience a few months ago, and now I can’t remember exactly what the steps were for it. It was on “antique” hardware and software at a community center, so I doubt the procedures would be the same, anyway.

This morning I started Calypso on the second of two kinds of appetite pills, a double dose. A single dose will be given this evening. She also has had the second Baytril, an antibiotic for the pancreatitis possibility.

At 2 pm I will contact the doctor again for further advice, and give her an update on her ups and downs.

I thank you for caring. - Jack

ETA: Gesturing Mildly, thank you for the referrals!

I had to put a kitty onto an appetite-increasing pill (not eating does Very Bad Things to feline livers, which are waaaaay more delicate and sensitive than a human liver, for those who are wondering) and that stuff gave my cat some serious munchies!

Getting your cat re-hydrated is a very important short-term step.

Hopefully, the two together will help Calypso feel better. Good luck to you both…

Thank you.

There is some good news for Calypso and the minor (!) problem of paying for her and the rent.

But first, before I forget, I remebered to ask at the vet’s for a picture of her to be taken, and they said it would be no problem to send it to my e-mail account. So all concerned can see a very frightened kitty at the vet, as they said I should “label” the pic. Later I’ll see about scanning her newborn kitten picture.

She is quite a bit dehydrated again, and weighs less than ever, but they showed me how to “encourage” her to eat with a tongue-depresser, and also gave me an “injecter” if that doesn’t work. I think they also gave water under the skin again, but I’ll have to call back to see about that.

They are willing to be a bit flexible about the current non-billing policy, especially since they know I am fundraising (in-person) and it doesn’t hurt that I established “credit” of a sort with them by paying an extra roughly $100 over and above today’s charges. They are apparently willing to separate an expensive item or two from non-billing policy as well. The main problem is that they recommend going straight to ultrasound, rather than x-ray, since the x-ray may possible not show anything.

Now, that would be at either Pittsford Animal Hospital or Greece Animal Hospital. They would have no say over whether they bill me, and I get the impression that they are both payment upon receipt of services.

BUT! A church had an unused 31 day bus pass and I have $50 and $100 coming from two relatives!

At this rate I may even get to pay the rent! Gotta’ run to call for more time!

And here we go:

One Very Scared Kitty at the Vet:

Calypso Gizmo Callico-Cat

“Gizmo” was the name given her at birth by a couple living across the street from me. After moving from 85 to 185 on the same street I was surprised to find “Rennie” living then one floor above me. (After briefly living on the other side of Rochester!) He kept asking about “Gizmo” and forgetting the name I gave her, so I decided that Gizmo should be retained as her middle name.

I had the Saturnian co-orbital satellite and the Greek nymph in mind, but I also had chosen the name “Calypso” becuase it is vaguely homophonic with “callico” as she is a dark calico.

The ***update ***on her is that radiology showed unmovable subsatnce blocking her small intestines. Surgery is the only option besides euthanasia. I am giving her fluid (mostly water) intravenously at home so she doesn’t have to go repeatedly to the vet or stay there. She is not in ongoing pain (yet) but is very weak from not being able to hold food down. When it comes time that she is always in pain, I will have to have her euthanized, barring the surgery (which I still can’t afford). A friend early on very gently offered her backyard for burial, as she has done for her pet and other friends’ pets.

FINANCIAL UPDATE:

I intend to sell an old family stamp collection online. In-person contributions have been coming in as dribs and darbs, mostly. I feel i may be able to re-negotiate with the staff if I raise half, though. They have already agreed to separate out the large x-ray charge for billing,

***I am not asking for monetary help on SDMB. It hasn’t been cleared, and I’m sorry if I implied otherwise. ***

But any help with fundraising (I have very little to sell) will be greatly appreciated!

:frowning: It’s going to be hard to let her go, If it comes to that. - Me

Thank you.

She did better for a while, but after a fullexam, I see that it’s time to say goodbye to her.

:frowning:

I’m so sorry to hear about your kitty, that’s really hard.

gives Jezebel a quick pet instead of dumping her off my lap, which is what I’d been planning to do.

I wish things had worked out better.

Thank you, all.

I’m sorry to hear it. I’m in the same place now with my aging doberman, grace. She has congestive heart failure. I’ve kept her going for about 6 months, but time is fast running out for her. She’s skin and bones and it’s now almost impossible to get her to eat. She’s not in pain, and she still gets up and goes out with the other dogs, but her time is measured in days now.
