Cat flatulence

My wife and I just adopted a cat. Actually, it adopted us. It crawled up on our porch to die, and we wouldn’t let it. We are now paying $300 in vet bills and are the somewhat proud owners of a mostly siamese.

She is a loving and appreciative cat, but the problem is she, to be crude, farts death dealing farts. She can clear a room in seconds. We have owned a number of cats in our time and never had one that farted.

Is this indicative of something else? Is there an illness that this might be a symptom of? Should we take her back to the vet and have her checked out? If yes, can she wait until we get the last vet bill paid off?

Is there a cat food that will cut down on the intensity of the problem?

Is the cat currently on antibiotics? That can have an effect. If not, then look towards the food it is eating. Start trying other brands or styles. If nothing else works, then return the cat to the vet for a checkup. Or just ask the vet the next time you see him/her.

It could be a change in diet, esp. if it went from mostly meat to stuff containing vegi’s and grains.

I’ve had great success in curing kitty gas by feeding the cat some yogurt with active cultures. Usually one or two containers will do the trick. Restores all that nice balance in their system. We only had to do this once with the worst offender, the petite little Cleo, and the problem never returned again. But she was one stinky kitten until we did!

It is probably the change in diet, although intestinal parasites can also cause gas in felines. Did you have her dewormed? Definitely do that, as she almost certainly has roundworm and tapeworm if she’s been living outside, not to mention the other nasty ones she could have picked up. I believe roundworm in particular causes bad gas. They should have given Drontal for tapeworm and the banana-flavored stuff for roundworm. If they didn’t, you should ask them to do it, even if she tested negative on a fecal sample. Lots and lots of cats test negative even when the owner has actually SEEN the worms exiting the cat’s body. It’s not all that reliable a test, and if she’s been living outside, she’s got a very high chance of having them.

I do run on. Thanks for taking her in. She’ll repay you in love, and apparently, farts.

We had her dewormed, desexed, detoxed and detained to make sure everything went well.

My wife just gave her a little yogart and we will see how that works.

Bene-Bac is made for felines and a good alternative.

I concur. With our fart machine, it only took about a tablespoon a day for a week and then the monster was fine and stink-free.

I once knew a friend’s cat who had astounding farts, real run-for-your-lifers. She’d sail into the room looking regally proud after an especially bad one.

His other cat ate the same diet and was normal and nonstinky.

I don’t know anything else about cat flatulence, but I’d like to suggest we adopt the term “catulence” for the duration of this thread.
