Bwahahaha! I’m sorry, I don’t mean to laugh, but it’s funny that a guy doesn’t know about steering fluid.
Years ago, a practical joke was played on our department secretary. The husband of another lady we knew was the chief of a small police department here. He came in to the office, all business like, to cite her for letting the water in her battery get low. She didn’t know what to think at first. She was most definitely flustered.
Pugsy, more hugs to you.
Welcome Amelioration! We’re a nice bunch of people here.
Taters, I’m glad there is some peace in your home. I’m especially glad both hubby and daughter were able to calm down and see reason. Family quarrels hurt!
As for Alzheimers - fortunately it doesn’t seem to run in our family. However, when I lived in Hawaii the police department had a program whereby a family would bring their elders to the police station to have them photographed and a record made of address, contact information, etc… Housing is so expensive in Hawaii it was more usual than not to have three generations in one home, and elderly frequently went wandering. With this program the police would know where to take them when they found them - and it was surprising how far some of those seemingly frail folks could wander!
Hi, Amelioration! Welcome to the MMP, where the Cool Kids hang out.
Li-Li, I’m not quite sure what kind of belly dancing it is we’re doing in class. It’s a rather casual class at our school gym, so we don’t really go in very deep. I’ve only been taking it for 5 months now, but it’s the highlight of my week.
’mika, you win. Although I have done contradancing and the Ceilidh. I LOVE the Ceilidh; I think I must’ve been Scottish in a past life. I remember we had a folk dancing class in middle school and I was so excited because I got to be partners with the guy I had a crush on.
Argh. Have three-hour class on Gender and Modernity in Colonial Korea today. Why are my courses always so depressing? trudges reluctantly off to class
(I swear, I fell for this one, much to the amusement of the then-current boyfriend. I refuse to become familiar with the workings of the combustion engine.)
Hugs to Puggy. I’ve been there. I can’t emphasize enough to take time for yourself and don’t forget to breathe.
No celebrations. It’s not like this is obtaining a doctorate - just something needed to do the job properly.
DH has tales to tell of Alzheimers-type people wandering off. One in particular believes that she lives somewhere else, so every couple of days, she “goes home.” Fortunately, she’s rarely gone more than about 100 yards away, and pretty much everyone at the building knows to keep an eye on her, especially if she’s carrying her canvas shopping bag. I think he’s going to have The Talk with her family soon that it’s time to transition her to an assisted-living or managed care facility.
It’s crazy cold here for the rest of the weekend. So bad, in fact, that the emergency services people are on the TV telling people to bring pets inside, and cover the fragile plants, etc. In our yard, the boxberry bushes are doing well - we’ve got some recently-planted citrus treelings that are presently covered by cardboard boxes so they don’t get frost-bit.
Just to tease **swampy ** - It’s another Lumberjack Day for me because of the cold. Red/black plaid flannel shirt, jeans, boots and a fleece-lined vest. The Winter Beard has grown to the point that you almost can’t tell if my shirt is buttoned up all the way or not. (It’s already become an effective crumb-catcher.)
Goodness! I haven’t even posted in this thread yet and already half a dozen of you welcome me here. Talk about one of the nicest welcomes I’ve ever had! Thank you, Dopers! (I imagine “Amelioration” is a bit tedious to type all the time, so “Ame” works just fine.)
Ali, am I really that predictable? (Though I suppose the very fact that I am posting this proves that I did search for your posts again, thereby falling directly into the trap you (most lovingingly, I’m sure) set up.) Forgive me for spying on you, as now you cannot rant and rave about me to “your crowd” without my prying eyes reading it. However… had you actually wanted to prevent that, I will assume you wouldn’t have encouraged my joining in the first place.
Alright, I’m done harassing him now. tosses him back to the masses
MMP-ers, forgive me if it takes a little while to learn the names and histories, and to fully understand how to walk the tightropes here. I may not be on all that often either (despite having what is probably the laziest college schedule in existence, heh), but I will try to be on and learn as quickly as I can.
Ok - I’m gonna post now, because if I wait until I get caught up, I’ll never post! That’s what happens all the time.
So yesterday I took my son all around town to run errands. We went to the dentist to approve his new partial. It’s supposed to be ready by next Wednesday. Then we stopped and ate breakfast at Waffle House. Then we went to the social security office (which only took 2 hours!) to get a replacement SS card for him. Then we went to Wally World to buy some groceries and some black slacks for him to wear to work. Then I took him to his second interview at a high end restaurant (read:expensive = better tips) and he got the job! So woo-hoo! He starts Monday. He won’t be broke for very long.
So today I’m taking it easy. 'Cept I had to go to the stoopid store to buy stoopd batteries for this stoopid wireless mouse. They wear out too fast, and somebody (who shall remain nameless) keeps forgetting to charge the rechargeable batteries.
(Please insert appropriate comments where needed.) Ok - back to reading the MMP.
Don’t worry, ame. I’ve been here for years, and I can’t tell you everyone’s history. You’ll just pick it up gradually, and if anything is confusing you, ask.
Driving Husband just took me grocery shopping. I realized we were [SUB]out of toilet paper[/SUB] and I need to do big cooking so Mr. Lissar will have things to eat for lunch. I’ve poached some chicken breasts, and I’m going to do a chicken and noodle and cheese casserole, and a zuchinni-walnut-rosemary potato crumble, and maybe some other stuff. Before work. Must run!
Welcome, ame! Or meli. We like multiple nicknames here.
Well, wasn’t this morning fun? NC and New Girl are both out today, I came in an hour late just because, I haven’t gotten approval for leaving my email account up until a client event - no skin off my nose, but once it’s deleted off of SAP, it’s bye-bye. Oh, and that massive report that they swore up and down a month ago would be ready for printing today? It’s not. It hasn’t even been reviewed yet, and they don’t know when it will be. It will take between 36 - 48 machine hours to complete. But the client still expects it on Tuesday. Yanno, when I tell you a job will take 5 days, I’m not including weekends days and holidays. They are going to have a screaming fit when all that overtime and/or outsourcing hits their account. They are going to be way, way, way over budget. Insert as many  as necessary.
Gratuitous horse picture, Khemosabi, one of the truly great Arabian studs. I had a Khemosabi granddaughter when I was in high school. She was magnificent as a 4 year old, she must have been incredible when she got older.
Congrats on resolving the teenage situation, Taters. It wasn’t so long ago that my teenager and I were butting heads VERY badly. I feel for you and your family.
Elvis movies - nothing after Love Me Tender is worth watching
Three Stooges - love ‘em, but nothing after Shemp joined (yeah, I know, he was there before Curley on vaudeville, but so what)
Abbott & Costello - only “Who’s On First” for me. Nuttin’ else
I Love Lucy - can’t stand it
American Idol - not enopugh vodka and hypnosis in the world for me to sit through one episode
gotti my Mom did that HUD stuff for the company she used to work for, managing an unassisted-living facility. Then she retired from that company, and they pay her a big consultant fee to go around to their properties in the US and Canada a couple times a year to straighten out the problems. She could never understand why so many people in her company had trouble with the HUD stuff. She always did well on the yearly audits and recertifications, high 90s IIRC.
really busy. One of our major suppliers appears to have closed up shop. I have a couple of hundred K in contracts to ship builders for this stuff. Thanks, [B’swampy** - I know where your “something bad” from yesterday ended up.
Imma doing my driving school online. My boss is in Ft. Lauderdale and my team leader is in Toronto (waves to li-li). It’s a 4-hour online course and they won’t let you finish faster. I’m waiting for one module to finish. I’ve got 7 minutes left.
meli, there are no rules here and everybody’s nice, dammit. Just ask fairychatmom. She’s especially nice if you send her chocolates.
My grandfather convinced his daughter (my aunt) when she started driving back in the 1950s that every summer she had to empty the winter air from the tires and replace it with summer air. And in the winter to get rid of the summer air. I think she did it for two years before he finally let her in on the joke.
This is our cat Toy. She’s five years old. When we got her last year, she weighed eight pounds and was afraid of people. Now she weighs 13 pounds, and will actually come up to people now to play and get some scritches.
::SWOON:: My fly seems to have come unzipped. Wanna help me with it?
Oh, and Bobbio…
meli everybody up in here is real jake except this one dude… thinks he’s a cello… gotta watch out for him!
Sean sometimes I sense bad things for other people. It’s a very strange and totally useless gift of mine.
Yay on the son’s new job Rebo.
MBGas if you could do without us.
I left work early. I came home, took some ibuprofen, soaked in the hot tub for a bit then took a nap. I feel better now. Supper tonight will be salmon croquets, smashed N.O.T. and peas and carrots. I might make biscuits but I dunno… can’t have ol’ y’all know who gettin’ too spoiled.
