Catherine O'Hara Appreciation

I always look forward to the O’Hara / Candy / Elvis scene:

She was also hilarious as Funkhauser’s crazy sister on Curb Your Enthusiasm last year.

I adore Catherine O’Hara. I’m living in hope that in 15-20 years, she and Joan Cusak will star together in a remake of Arsenic and Old Lace.

That’s great! I remember her on Leno years ago talking about her “crazy sister Mary-Margaret”. We met her when she performed for the “Count Your Blessings” Christmas music concert with Jane Siberry, Holly Cole, Victoria Williams, Rebecca Jenkins and the brilliant pianist Tim Ray.

I can actually see John as Teddy. Anyway, AWESOME casting idea!

Don’t forget this song, which almost won an Oscar.

“I want to bear ALL your children!”

She’s one my favourites, so natural and easily funny. Kristen Wiig reminds me of her like that.

And which she (and Eugene Levy) performed live for an audience of hundreds of millions of viewers at the Oscars. She and Levy both said at the time they were on the verge of “piss ourselves nervous” because neither’s a professional singer or musician and now they had the largest audience of their lives; I think they pulled it off well.

That was actually a difficult role in the film as well, because it really was comedy-drama and worked as both.

Catherine O’Hara has a very rare gift for a female actress. Namely, even when she plays a selfish, disagreeable, even downright crazy bitch (Beetlejuice, After Hours) she still maintains such a sense of vulnerability and sympathy that she remains very likable. Even if the role doesn’t specify it, it’s as though you always feel that, deep down, she’s really a good person and is only hiding her good side because someone took advantage of it.

Not to mention, again even when playing a heavy, she’s darn cute!

Does anyone remember the SCTV skit, “Laurie Tells a Story?” I can’t find a clip of it anywhere. That’s when I fell in love with her.

Here’s an interesting fact about her…

She has a condition known as situs inversus, a congenital condition in which the major visceral organs are reversed or mirrored from their normal positions.

So she’s from the Mirror Universe. But not Evil.

Interesting.

Donny Osmond has that too.

But about Catherine O’Hara, the Dusty Towne Holiday Special (from SCTV) is annual viewing in my household.

I absolutely love Catherine O’Hara. She’s easily the funniest actress I know of. She’s wonderful in the Home Alone movies, and she’s my favorite in Waiting for Guffman, especially when she and Fred Willard audition with “Midnight at the Oasis.” I kind of hate her in Six Feet Under, but you’re supposed to.

Oh yeah! She was definitely the hot one, out of her and Andrea Martin! Although, at the time, I always considered Martin to be the funnier of the two…

I also loved her since SCTV.
Sadly, unrequited.

For Your Consideration wasn’t a great movie, but I’m floored by O’Hara’s ability to (well, spoilers here, so) Make herself look like she got a bad facelift, purely through voluntary muscular action. She’s allergic/sensitive to latex and stuff, so they couldn’t hoist her face back with adhesive and wire or whatnot, so she just made that awful face, and it looks perfect!
