cats and flying bugs

If a cat is trying to catch a flying bug of some sort, but cannot catch it because the bug is up high and the cat is down low, is it cruel/unfair/unethical for you to hold the cat in the air to help it catch the bug???

I’ve actually done this and the amusement I and the cat get out of it outweight the lives of a bunch of lousy bugs.

Try that with my cat and he’ll forget all about the bugs - human fingers are so much tastier.

That aside, if you have a cat that will tolerate being lifted and whooshed about the room in search of bugs, go for it. Just don’t blame us if the cat gets airsick

Anything that will keep kitty amused and not destroying furniture is a good thing

It’s more than that. It’s evil. It is interfering with the Natural Order of Things, playing where man does not belong, and upsetting God’s plan (if God had intended cat’s to fly…)

Moreover, it’s risking a clawmark to the nose from a cat who isn’t used to being held while it tries to kill things.

On the one hand I think you would make the baby Jesus cry if you were to do this, but on the other hand the terrorists wouldn’t benefit at all, so just flip a coin.
Or, flip a cat. Really high. Towards the bug.

Well I suppose it’s better than what my brother used to do. He’d stand in the back yard tossing bread to attract birds while holding Mozart, our 13 lb siamese kitty. Mozie was already a great hunter on his own, he really didn’t need the help.
I would help my kitties if they were after bugs though. Especially bugs in the house. Morpheus loves ‘em. Esp spiders. I give Morphie extra lovin’ and treats when he catches a bug. In addition to the bug, I mean.

In our house the comparison is: One one hand help the cat by holding her and cruelly end some insectual invader’s life, or on the other hand let the cat chase the stupid bug on her own throughout the house destroying lamps, vases, china and assorted knick-knacks (and somehow she does not wipe out the ugly cheap stuff - only the expensive - go figure).

I vote for placing a chair, stepstool, or other elevated surface in a location where kitty can use it as a launch platform for catching the aforementioned insectoids.

My cats generally prefer to hunt ground-dwelling insects, though. They’re kinda lazy, especially Schrodinger the Invisi-Cat.

I don’t know that I’d call in unethical, but it doesn’t do anything to help the cat with his or her problem solving skills.

When I was much younger, I tried to teach our cats to fly. It involved tossing them in the air over the swimming pool. I figured that if cats were that afraid of water then they would for sure be inspired to learn to fly.
It didn’t work, but probably just because the cat didn’t know how to miss the water.
