That an expression that will not pass my lips (or my fingertips) unless I am comfortable severing all friendly relations with the person to which it is directed. I’d be very surprised if I’d said such a thing to another Doper and forgotten it. I can only remember being really angry with one other Doper, but I still felt compelled to try to remain civil, and phrase an intelligent argument.

No. It’s quite beside the point. This is like responding to expressed outrage engendered by rubbing shit in someone’s face by saying “I did it because she was wearing an ugly hat. Come on, you’ve got to admit-- it was an ugly hat.”
As I said in the other thread, some people’s personal experiences will make a joke all too real, and take it from the realm of irreverent comedy into that of serious tragedy. I don’t presume to judge those people or their experiences, and cannot naysay their lives. But on the whole, like catsix, I’d prefer people shut up about it.
And as Guin writes and reads “slash” fiction, a genre of poorly written internet stories in which authors’ beloved characters are twisted into sex-craved homosexuals looking for a good random fuck, I don’t think she has any fucking room to call anybody else on having a sense of humour in “bad taste.”
The response to catsix in the other thread was ridiculous, unwarranted anger. People have different senses of humour, deal with it. The mods/admins of this board have stated their position, and clearly they want a board of a flavor that doesn’t include certain types of humour. It’s within their right to craft the atmosphere of these boards as they see fit. But I don’t see why we should attack a person merely for stating their opinion on this matter.
And it’s no surprise to see, once again, Mockingbird being a world-class dickhole in this thread. It’s not like I expected anything better. Fuck off and leave sensible people to resolve the issue. At least Guin usually deals in reasonable discourse, I can count on her to resolve this disagreement amicably. But you have to throw your needless vitriol about in a thread where you aren’t wanted. So back the fuck off and let us rational adults handle this.
Did you see the several times in that thread where I specifically stated that I know different people find different things humorous and that I think there’s nothing wrong with that?

Everybody in that thread chimed in with their POV, and so did I. Why is it that out of all the people in that thread, even all the ones who said ‘Gory joke, but not as bad as some of the stuff that’s been on this board’, I was the one who got jumped on?
When I speak my opinion, some people (like jarbabyj) show up to insinuate that I only pretend to have that opinion because it’ll get a reaction. I don’t like being accused of trolling, even if it is in a subtle manner.
And your opinion would be right on, if I had ever said that. I even tried to illustrate that I think there will be things that some people find funny and some don’t with my example about Letterman. How about Adam Sandler? I don’t find him funny, but millions of people do. Then again, I think Steven Wright is hilarious, and others don’t. That’s why there are different jokes and different comedians. If you don’t like the Nick DiPaulo show, don’t go to it. Go see a comedian you like. But please don’t tell me that I’m juvenile because my sense of humor is different from yours.
Really guys, how many times do I have to re-state the same damn thing before it sinks in? Everyone is different. Everyone has a different sense of humor. If dark, morbid, sick humor isn’t your thing, that’s fine. It’s your right to be offended by it. Don’t laugh at the joke, express your outrage if you want. But please understand that some of us will laugh, and that it’s not a personal dig against you.
I used to think nothing offended me, but I was wrong. Having people suggest I don’t have any honest opinions, that I only exist to pretend I believe whatever will get me attention, it’s the insinuation that I’m a troll. That’s offensive.
I read the other (now closed) thread last night, and would have posted there if possible.
I thought Q.E.D., Manhattan, and jarbabyj all three had a ridiculous response to catsix.
All catsix did was state that she thought a particular (sick) joke was funny. For this, Q.E.D. suggests that she move to another message board, Manhattan threatens/implies a banning if she doesn’t “follow the rules”, when she hasn’t broken or threatened to break any rules, and jarbabyj writes a parody about trolling. WOW!
Now, I’m not aware of any interaction elsewhere, but limited to that thread only, the actions of the above three individuals were way over the top, and the pitting of catsix here is past silly.

Gosh, Guin, you must have read a different thread than I did. Are you sure you linked to right one? I didn’t see catsix attack anyone or anything. I saw plenty of people insulting her left, right, and sideways, though.
She said she thought it was funny. She said she wished we could just live and let live, humorwise. There were no guns a’blazing. There was no statement, or even any implication that anyone shouldn’t have been offended, or that people were stupid to not share her sense of humor.
Either you need to lay off the hallucinogens, there’s another thread that’s got everyone all worked up, or this is the most ridiculous tempest in a teapot I’ve ever seen.
I don’t see those two statements as being mutually exclusive. Certainly catsix is allowed to express her opinion. And so am I. Which I did. End of story.
And please don’t stick words in my mouth. I did not suggest she move to another message board. What I did say, you quoted above, and means nothing more or less than what it says. For the functionally illiterate amongst you, I’ll translate, however: “Please post your sick humor elsewhere and only post material that conforms to this board’s standards”.
I can’t speak for guin, only myself, and I admit that my reaction to catsix in that thread was a built up reaction to many of her other “opinions”, and was probably not as well thought out as it should have been.
I’ve interacted with catsix on and off board for about a year, which has included many feuds and many deeply hurt feelings on both sides. In that time she’s informed me (and several other rape victims) that her method of getting over her rape is really the BEST way, and why are all of us saying that it’s still such a big deal??? She called me STUPID because I said I hated guns and would never own one. I believe she criticized me and others for going to therapy calling all doctors and psychologists “head butchers”. Plus, like myself a few years ago, she has an unnatural and seemingly forced misogynistic streak, in which she is constantly expressing a dislike of women, women who cry, women who have body issues, women who are depressed…WOMEN WHO AREN’T AS TOUGH AS HER.
I completely agree that we all have different opinions on this board. The baby punching joke IN MY OPINION was not funny (not even on a morbid humor scale, I mean it wasn’t even really creative or clever, as some disgustingly morbid jokes are), and I WAS ABLE TO SEE how it could be offensive. Catsix found it funny and said TOO BAD SOME PEOPLE CAN’T INTERPRET A JOKE AS A JOKE, which, in my OPINION was her way of telling us she has this superior intellect that allows her to process thoughts and words better than us lowly peons who are less developed in the humor world.
Perhaps, and I know that this is my case, I saw that it was a joke, and guess what…it was still…fucking…offensive…to me.
In my OPINION, catsix wanted to show off her tough, callused, woman of the world attitude by saying that jokes about abuse induced miscarriage are funny, and it’s too bad all of us are unable to find that funny too, because whatever SHE says is ultimately right.
Yet another person breaking his silence to say that catsix didn’t do anything wrong. More than that, I woud say the response she got was obnoxious. I have seen the easily offended in full regalia before, but this is shameful. I would especially like to hear Manhattan’s explanation of his posts in that thread. He didn’t seem to realize that catsix never posted anything offensive.
Pitting Anal Scurvy was understandable. I could see that coming. Guin though chose to open a separate thread to pit someone for saying she thought the joke was funny. Maybe you need to get much thicker skin.
Yes humor does differ. There are thousands of different viewpoints represented here and thousands of different ways to offend someone. There is a small group of posters who like to remind us just how much they are being offended on a regular basis. I will take it for granted in the future that dark humor of any kind is unwanted. I would only hope that some would find it in themselves to live and let live. Just once read a bad off color joke and let it pass without comment.

I think dead baby jokes are heelarious. Hellen Keller jokes? Funnieee! The councilmember shooting in City Hall here in New York a week ago; Elizabeth Smart; my daughter’s head, toe and hand stitches (I expect a visit from child protection services any minute now); conjoined twins—all the object of my derisive humor.
Unlike Anal Scurvy (not the object of this pitting) I never posted any of these sad, sick jokes. But now I’ve admited that I find them funny do I get my own pitting? I mean catsix didn’t tell the stupid joke, she only said she found it funny (and from where I read, she was unfailing polite in the process) and here we all are. (And if I may jump in on the other pile-on going on in this thread-- Cnote, the survey results indicate that you are being a very large diarrhea spewing ass.)

I appreciate the explanation. Just realize that if there is baggage between two posters that informs your posts you need to let us know that. Reading the thread at face value I fail to see any way catsix was being offensive.
You don’t know me from Adam. If I were to post that I found the joke funny and I wish people could let me be to enjoy my gallows humor I doubt there would be any reaction beyond a mild difference of opinion.
There’s a difference between saying “I think the joke was funny” and saying “too bad some people can’t interpret a joke as a joke” which to me translates into “if you all weren’t so dumb, you would think it was funny too.” which means if we don’t think it’s funny, (even if we ARE able to interpret it as a joke) then we’re stupid.
