I know the OP for that thread was banned, but I’m a little shocked that it got a single reply that wasn’t a cuss out. Not only was it racist and sexist, it wasn’t even funny. I know the Dope is full of weird, random threads that contain TMI or borderline-bigoted rants, but usually they’re worth a look. Or a jumping off point for discussion and debate. Or funny. That post made this place look about as enlightened as a YouTube comment section, and I’m embarrassed that anyone checking out this board for the first time might come across it, even if it’s locked (and yes, I’m happy that my ‘nigger pussy’ comment lead to this. Because Inuit women’s vaginas are as hilarious as squaw hopping).

Well, I for one am ashamed we are not all at the OP’s level of outrage. What can we do to remedy this? Perhaps get TubaDiva to give us the name and address of the person who started that thread, and picket his or her home?
The line comes from Full Metal Jacket. When you realize that, it takes on a new level of absurdity because that might have been one of the least offensive lines in the whole movie.
Of course it was a silly question. But racist and sexist? Only if you’re looking for a reason to be upset. It could hardly have been a serious question to begin with.

I think people didn’t curse the OP out because they know that’s against the rules, and they knew this bit of relatively minor trolling was not worth getting a warning over. For the most part they treated it as a stupid joke. That’s what people here usually do with a thread that dumb. I banned the OP because he was obviously trolling and intended to let people have their fun with it.
As a secondary point, not everybody knows that “Eskimo” is considered offensive by Inuits and some others. I came of age in the era of PC schooling, and even I forgot about that until I saw your post and figured out what you were trying to say. That’s why I was going to leave the thread open. So thanks for the reminder - you’re definitely right that a similar thread about black people would’ve gotten closed and probably removed - although it goes without saying that you could’ve made that point in a different way.
FWIW, I’ve had friends from Alaska relate that some Inuits refer to themselves as Eskimos.

Marley23, I don’t think “Eskimo” is offensive to Alaskan Inuit. Just Canadian ones - and even then, I know a few old-timers that refer to themselves as Eskimo.
You must tell that to the Alaskans including Inuit who have no problem being called Eskimos.
And its offensive in Greenland as well.

I’m from Alaska and I’ve heard plenty of Eskimos refer to themselves as Eskimos. Of course, most of the Eskimos I went to school with were Yupik. In Alaska “Eskimo” is a completely innocuous word. However the more common word is “Native”, since there are all sorts of different native Alaskans: Alaska Natives - Wikipedia
Just as some, uh (lemme cover the bases here) First Nations/Native/Indigenous Americans call themselves Indians (albeit often with a dash of irony– hey, you think you found India? Sure. We’re Indian). But, call me crazy, the ‘pussy’ made me think the strength and beauty of North America’s Inuit women wasn’t being taken into account (even if it was from a movie). It’s like saying Asian women have sideways vaginas. Just fucking stupid. Maybe too stupid to get worked up over, but like I said, it’s embarrassing to see that kind of crap here.
“Squaw hopping” is the rape of Native women, sometimes preceded by a joyride by the reservation. It’s not quite as bad as rape, y’see, because the women aren’t white. Native and Alaskan native women are 2.5 times more likely to be sexually assaulted than other American women.

I’ve had people actually ask if my hands are cold because of it. All in all that kind of stupidity doesn’t affect my life much because it’s just words, but yea it can just fuck right off.
I didn’t read the thread but I knew that it was a play on the Ceicle column on “How Deep is Whale Shit?”
You see a common is “That is deeper than whale shit” so someone asked to find out how deep it is. Another common expression is “Colder than Eskimo pussy”, kind of like “Colder than a Witches tit”, of course that phrase is sexist and mocks Wiccan Americans.
I was disappointed that only when there was a slur against African Americans did anyone consider the thread offensive. So the people of this board must think that making offensive comments about Inuits/Eskimos is fine.
