Causes of foot swelling

I woke up a couple of days ago with my left foot swollen, only my left foot, throughout the day I felt pain in my calf which extended to the knee and my ankle went big also.

Today my right foot is a little swollen, the left is puffed up like a pillow. I have had no injuries, no strenuous exercise, haven’t been bitten by anything, just sitting at my desk. Really strange this. I am a smoker.

Any ideas?

I know it’s GQ and I’m guessing but I’m sure something is interfering with venous return.

DOCTOR NOW!

I thought it would go away, tried soaking in salt hot water, elevating it. Tonight seems its extending up my leg a sort of uncomfortable feel. Doc tomorrow, any natural diuretics I could try?

When one foot/calf swells acutely without obvious reason (such as trauma), especially with associated pain in the calf, two things come to mind:

Ruptured Baker’s Cyst

Deep Venous Thrombosis (i.e. clot)

Missing the former is no big deal, but a clot you need to know about it. So, an ER/MD visit is in order.

Of course, if it is actually the case that both your feet are swelling, a whole new set of possibilities arise . . .

When you poke it with your finger, does it stay compressed like memory-foam mattress?

Ok doc tomorrow as its not going away anytime soon. Thanks for the replies.

Yes it does. Had something similar after a long haul flight. But both feet.

OK, good that you’re seeing a doctor tomorrow and just killing time with us in the meantime. But that’s consistant with edema.

I’m in Asia, different time zones, the thought of seeing a doc here is a bit daunting so I thought I’d run it past the board. Always good advice.

If you develop chest pain or shortness of breath, do not delay. See doctor immediately.

This happened to my wife and has stayed that way for about 7 years. No pain discoloration or other ill effects, other than one swollen leg. Went to tons of dr’s, specialists, etc. Had tons of tests - xrays, ultrasounds, etc. No real diagnosis, no real treatment except compression stockings which don’t do much.

Any advice would be great!

Medical advice is best suited to IMHO.

This happened to me a couple of years ago minus the calf swelling. It turned out that I had cracked a couple of metatarsals without realizing it.

:wishing best for the OP:

Perhaps gout.
