CD burning/Encoding question

I often burn compilation CDs for myself and for friends. When friends want me to burn them a disc, they send me their MP3 files (usually collected from Napster), and I convert the files to WAV and burn them into an audio CD. No problem there with the output/quality of the disc when it’s done.

My friends use WinAmp or sometimes the built in CD playing software installed with Windows to play the discs on their computers, and when I send them the newly encoded disc, it brings up “Track 01, Track 02, etc” and queries CDDB for disc info on every track.

Obviously the CDDB site won’t offer any match on CDs in their database, but I’m wondering why the encoded names on the WAVs or MP3s don’t transfer over to the CD media to be read by the music player.

I noticed recently that you can change the songs within you WinAmp playlist to convert the ID3v1 or ID3v2 tags to reflect the changes on how it is displayed on WinAmp. Could I use this on the WAV files before I burn them to CD to reflect changes on how the names come up on the display?

On a side note, could someone please explain the differences between ID3v1 and ID3v2?

Thank you for any help and replies.

Cheers.

They will, if your burning program supports the CD-Text standard. One that I know does this is Nero. And of course the player (and corresponding CD drive) has to recognize it as well. I don’t know offhand which ones do, and I’m sure it’s a relatively scarce ability, since they all use CDDB nowadays. Maybe someone else will know?

This link has some more info on CD-Text: http://www.freenet.carleton.ca/~aa571/cdtext.htm

And this might help with your ID3 questions: http://www.id3.org/

Thanks SmackFu.

I probably should have included the fact that I use Adaptec Easy CD Creator software (v4.02a). Thanks you for the links, I will check them out! In the near future I will buy a firewire burner and hopefully it will come with software that supports the CD-Text standard. In the meantime, I will look at Nero. Danke.

Please, if anyone has any other info, please reply!

Nero does support CD text- whatever the name of your .Wav file is, it will appear like that on a CD player that supports CD text. I’ve got a newer version of Adaptec and it has an option for CD text, but it has never worked for me (and yes, I’ve checked that option in the menu).
