CD Missing--Doing A Slow Burn

No, not burning CDs.

Burning with anger.

One CD, from a set of 2 is missing.

Never left the house.

Listened to it yesterday.

Not in the stereo.

Not on the shelves. (I never leave CDs out of the case or machine!)

Checked in several CD cases.

No strangers around.

Can’t find it.
It’s an Import from Japan. I can’t even find the 2 disk edition on Amazon.

The last time I had a CD go missing, it turned up in the CD drawer of my computer. I had forgotten that I’d played it through the computer, not the stereo system.

I never do that, as my sound card is kerplotz.

That’s too bad, because the only sure way to find it is to buy a replacement. Once you do that, it’ll turn up.

What’s the first thing you listened to after you listened to the missing CD? Did you listen to it in a CD player or a DVD player? Could the missing CD be in a DVD case somehow?

I’ve double-stacked CD’s before, and spent quite a while once thinking I’d lost one. Then I found it in another CD case, underneath the other CD; I guess I’d switched them in the player, goofed and put the wrong CD in the case, then stacked the other one in on top of it without looking. So - what did you listen to after your missing CD?

Have you checked the refrigerator?

I had a 5 disk changer that in the process of going bad developed the habit of occasionally picking up a CD, and delivering it to a mysterious internal space. I’d put a CD in the tray, close it up, and the display would deny that there was a disk in the machine. Opening up the tray confirmed this: NO DISK. Hitting the thing, and repeatedly opening/closing the tray would usually cause the CD to reappear. I junked the machine when that stopped working, and retrieved the final disk by removing the changer’s case.

Huh…I had the exact same thing happen to me today. I opened up a the case on a dual CD, and only one was in there.

Well, except it was in a box filled with junk, which was stored in my basement, and the last time I saw this CD it was in the bottom of the spare tire compartment of my wife’s car, and that was like three years ago.

Ok, maybe not the exact same thing. Still, I’d like that other disc back.

No, I never use a DVD player for that.

And I’ve checked about 25% of my CD collection.

No, it ain’t a multichanger–I avoid them, because they jam.

Um, not that I’ve ever had this happen or anything…but…is there a waste paper basket/ garbage can near where that stereo is? Have you checked it…?

Yes, and I checked it.

First thing, AAMOF.

AAMOF?

I’ve occasionally double-stacked discs in a CD player… at least once, it managed to play the one on the bottom. Have you checked to make sure there’s no more than one disc in any tray?

Hmmm. Sounds like you’re in for some jewel-case bingo. And I second that it’s conceivably possible that two CDs might be cohabiting in one case. (If you’re lucky, they’ll hatch a brood of little Sandisk flash cards… )

Well. I guess that’s the last time I get drunk and break into Bosda’s house for a little bit of John Denver.

No. It is a non-rotating, single disc, bookshelf model.

Still no luck.

Went through every CD I’ve used in the last 6 months. Nothing.

Inspected the player. Nothing.

Inspected the jewel case it came in for the 423rd time. Nothing.

Moved furniture, & looked behind. Nothing.

Checked CD racks & cases for loose CD. Nothing.

I’m sorry to say that it’s probably gone to live with my missing earrings and socks. If you find it, will you send the earrings back?

I do the same thing, too!

What’s the title of the CD, Bosda?

Cowboy Bebop:O.S.T. Future Blues/Knonkin’ On Heaven’s Door by Yoko Kano & The Seatbelts

That truly sucks! It’s an awesome CD. Probably my favourite of the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks.

FWIW, I had a similar thing happen to me with a limited edition Duke Ellington double-CD release. I practically tore my place apart looking for it. I’m talking moved furniture, tossed aside couch cushions, and even partial disassembly of my stereo cabinet. I eventually gave up looking and I occasionally would consider purchasing a used copy off GEMM but I never got around to it. One day, about a year later I was moving my CD rack and, low and behold, the missing disc slid out from in-between other jewel cases…from a place I swore I checked a dozen times before.
