CD's you've bought more than once

I’m highly obsessive about taking care of my CDs, and rarely have had one go bad unless it was defective “out of the box” – the only one I can think of is Dream Theater’s Awake, which developed a skip that only showed up on my CD-ROM drive, on all other players it played fine. Still, I replaced it.

I also replaced my copies of Tool’s Undertow and Dream Theater’s When Day and Dream Unite (the rare Mechanix version, grrr…) before realizing it was my CD player that was defective.

As for “upgrading” CD’s to remastered/bonus tracks versions, well, there’s a lot. The ones I can think of:

Anthrax “Stomp 422”
Black Sabbath s/t (had 2 versions with different tracklist; the remastered version replaced both)
Deep Purple “Perfect Strangers”, “The Book of Taliesyn”, “Made in Japan”
Depeche Mode “Black Celebration” (still have both copies)
ELP “Black Moon”, “In the Hot Seat”
Emerson, Lake & Powell s/t
Genesis “Three Sides Live” (still have both copies)
Holy Terror “Mind Wars” (replaced with a 2CD containing both their albums; however, the new “Mind Wars” disc was defective, and after returning it 3 times I realized it was a mastering defect. So I kept my original Combat pressing of “Mind Wars” and sold the new defective one to the used CD store. Last I checked, it’s still there.)
Iron Maiden “Killers”, “Live After Death”, “Fear of the Dark”
Jethro Tull “Aqualung”, “Thick as a Brick”
Judas Priest “Unleashed in the East” (the import version is called “Priest in the East”)
Led Zeppelin “Houses of the Holy”, “Physical Graffiti”
Metallica s/t (3 copies - upgraded to the import/bonus track edition many years ago, then sold it in a fit of pique after the whole Napster debacle. A friend “donated” a regular copy to fill my collection so I wouldn’t have to download it. )
Motorhead “Iron Fist”, “No Remorse”
Possessed “Beyond the Gates”
Rainbow “Finyl Vinyl”
Savatage “Sirens”
Slayer “Reign in Blood”, “Diabolus in Musica” (that last one was a mistake)
tribute: “Masters of Misery: Tribute to Black Sabbath” (still have both versions)
W.A.S.P. s/t, “The Headless Children”
Yes “Tales from Topographic Oceans”, “Union”

As for vinyl → CD upgrades, don’t get me started, there’s at least 500 or so…

Midnight Oil’s Blue Sky Mining was the first rock album I ever bought (on tape). A friend borrowed it and it came back ruined. So I bought another one, which I lost somewhere along the way. I bought it on CD years later, and promptly lost the CD. So I was using my roommate’s, which I then lost. It was replaced (but I didn’t actually buy it, so as to fool the album into staying around – that worked). I bought a used CD the next time, since I knew I’d lose it again. Which I did.

Toy Matinee (eponymous) was one I bought on tape, and later bought on CD (which I gave away). I saw it in a vending machine in southern Illinois in the middle of a road trip, but the change machine was broken and I didn’t have $7 in quarters. Luckily, my last replacement is the ten-year anniversary special edition.

All of these are LP and CD (I like both formats; LP for at-home, CD for on the road)

Operation Ivy - Energy/Hectic (Two CD’s and one LP/EP. One CD for a friend)
Green Day - 39/Smooth and Kerplunk!
Dropkick Murphys - Sing Loud, Sing Proud
Elvis Costello - My Aim is True
Ramones - Rocket to Russia
Police - Outlandos D’Amour
Beatles - Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band
Weezer - Maladroit
Sex Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks…

Savatage - Streets: A Rock Opera
Meatloaf - Bat out of Hell
Mortal Kombat Soundtrack (I am lame)

Abby Road. It was in the stereo that was stolen from me as I moved out freshman year.

I had an entire CD collection stolen (long story) so I replaced many, many, many CDs. I don’t usually upgrade from LP to CD unless I find a really great deal on the CD itself. If I want an LP to be portable I burn it onto a MiniDisc. My taste in music is so pitiful that no one ever borrows my CDs, hahahaha, and to the best of my knowledge, I’ve never worn out a CD. I find that usually when a CD skips on one machine, it’ll most often be fine with a cleaning or on a better machine.

Pink Martini’s Sympathique. I must have 3 or 4 copies of that album on hand as impromptu gifts for people. I bought one at a concert because they were signing and I didn’t think to bring the one at home.

U2’s All That You Can’t Leave Behind. I got a used copy to give to someone, but never did, so I left that copy at work for a long time. This was before the work computer got upgraded to have a CD-Rom drive.

Yes - Tormato
Jeff Buckley - Grace

gifts

Pearl Jam Ten I bought 3 times, first one was a cassette and it melted in the hot sun at Ocean City, Md. The second one was stolen.

I’ve also bought many Pink Floyd cassettes and cds more then once, for different reasons. Gold editions, remastered, whatever.

I bought U2’s All That You Can’t Leave Behind again, after the first copy had some sort of unfortunate accident.

The next time I go to Best Buy I’ve got to get copy number two of Roger Waters’ Amused to Death; the CD was originally black, now it’s so scratched it’s practically silver again. On the whole, it looks as if something tried to eat it.

All of my Elvis Costello ( which in this case is all of his output ), either already or eventually, since they are in the process of updating all of his old catalogue with 2-CD sets.

Skinny Puppy’s Last Rights was orignally released with the time signature off by 25 seconds or so and I “had” to get the corrected rerelease when it came out.

Love & Rockets first four albums got an el-deluxo re-release last year, so I have two of each of those (Seventh Dream of Teenage Heaven’s rerelease had the UK format, whereas the orignal American version had… well, the original American format. All but Earth, Sun, Moon had bonus tracks, too).

Slowdive’s Souvlaki was available in the US only as an import for a year or so after it came out, so I got that; later on SBK released a domestic version with 4 bonus tracks and a sticker saying something like “Don’t buy the import!!!” Too late for most, I’m sure.

I got Coil’s Love’s Secret Domain when it first came out and it soon turned into quite the collector’s item. Then they rereleased it a couple years ago. Damn them. So I bought it again in case anything happens to the original. (<— sucker).

I bought Orbital’s first disc in England ages ago and heard people in the US bitch about it and I couldn’t figure out why. Turns out the US version is rather different. So I bought it, and found out why people complained. Completism is not without its pitfalls, I guess.

I got Modern English’s After the Snow on CD back in the Paleolithic Age, as I recall, and enjoyed the heck out of it. In the early 90s 4AD rereleased an expanded version of it, and it sucked. Now the US/Sire version is unavailable, and my CD is not in good shape. Grr!

Godflesh released the Merciless EP and then the Selfless LP in 1994. Then there was a combined re-release in 1995, I think. Yeah, I bought that too.

I’m sure there’s more, these are just off the top of my head. If I listed the ones I bought as replacements for records or tapes I’d be here all night.

I hope this doesn’t wind up being a double-post (Confound you, hamsters! Run faster!)…

Jeez, I thought I had more, but now I can only think of four. If you’re including upgrading from LP/cassette to CD, then it’s more than I could probably remember.

Spock’s Beard - Snow
Pink Floyd - Animals
Genesis - Wind and Wuthering
Rush - Exit Stage Left

I’m probably going to have to re-purchase The Kindness of Strangers by Spock’s Beard too, if I don’t find my original soon.

We had a bunch stolen from us too… sooo…

Love and Rockets… “Express”
The Flaming Lips… “Oh My Gawd it’s the Falming Lips!”
The Orb… “U.F. Orb”, both 1 CD and 2CD editions
Monster Magnet… “Dopes to Infinity”

and many more that we’d love to replace but have not had the $$$ yet

All of these are CDs replaced, not upgrades… those would be too numerous to mention.

urg… “Falming” = “Flaming”

I need to read more carefully…

I got Sex Pistols’ Never Mind The Bollocks on 8 track when it came out, then bought the Lp, then the Cassette twice, the CD and finally on vinyl again. I’ve had every Dead Kennedys album twice on vinyl once on cassette. I’ve had The Dead Boys Young Loud and Snotty, Devo Q. Are We Not Men, and a bunch of Frank Zappa albums on all four formats as well. That doesn’t count the dozens of albums I upgraded from cassette or cd TO vinyl (yes, I said upgraded TO vinyl)

Jon

I’ve had to replace my copy of the Bloodhound Gang’s “One Fierce Beer Coaster” because of scratches.

Ironically I use the 1st cd as a drink coaster nowadays, and back up each new cd I get onto the comp.

I’ve bought Being There by Wilco 4 times, once cause it got stolen after the first time I had it, and 2 more as presents for people. I had to buy a lot of others twice after they got stolen.

Exile in Guyville - Liz Phair. Apparently there is a rule that when a couple breaks up, the female gets to keep this CD… regardless of who entered the relationship with it.
I’m on my 4th.
